Beeslaar Pinotage 2023
$100.00From a 2.5 ha vineyard, dry grown, shale soils and old bush vines. Open top fermentation, followed by 20 months in French oak barriques. Very simple stuff, but the wine is far from simple. Intense aromas of blackberry, blood plum, mulberry and cassis. Rich and full bodied, remarkably elegant – svelte even, considering the size […]

Schafer-Frohlich Felsenberg Riesling GG 2022
$170.0095 points Stuart Pigott (JamesSuckling.com): “Stacks of smoky minerality on the sleek, yet compact and well-structured palate. Also excellent citrus ripeness that easily carries the vibrant grapefruit acidity. Long, super-clean finish. Drink or hold. (9/3/23)” 93-95 points Anne Krebiehl MW (Vinous): “The 2022 Riesling Schlossböckelheimer Felsenberg Grosses Gewächs is made from various parcels at different […]

Holyman Pinot Noir 2024
$60.00Despite the light colour, pouring the wine releases an immense bouquet. I know we’re in for a treat! Expressive and vibrant with plum, cherry, raspberry, blackberry and five spice. Deep, succulent and complex and so much presence and grip. Tannins are very fine, that seem to tighten towards the close. Scaffolding acidity, with the length […]

By Farr Shiraz 2024
$110.00This is always so, so good. It’s complex which I love, as so often this grape is one dimensional. There is more than a note of ripe fruit, there is graphite, black olives, it feels silky yet there is a note of ocean spray, a faint yet lovely salinity, then follows the spice. There is […]

Cantina D’Arcy Langhe Nebbiolo 2022

Crushed flowers of lavender, rose, violet and geranium with a compote of sweet and tangy summer red fruits, wild herbs and subtle Asian spice. Medium bodied, with an elegant intensity that is simply breathtaking. Layered, detailed and tensioned, elements drawn from a bow string, interwoven. Such precision, […]

Sadie Family Swartland Skerpioen 2024
$205.00“Skerpioen comes from one of the Swartland’s most unusual and beautiful sites, a 90-year-old vineyard on a combination of beach sand and bright-white limestone. Marrying equal parts Palomino and Chenin Blanc, the 2024 is slightly broader than usual, but retains its defining sea breeze freshness. Jasmine and wet stone lead you into a sappy, pure, […]

Savage Not Tonight Josephine 2024 (375ml)
$95.00Chenin Blanc from a young, trellised vineyard in Piekenierskloof. Grapes sundried for two to three weeks. Extraordinary aromatics of dried peach and apricot, pineapple, straw, potpourri, fynbos and a hint of honey. The palate is super-concentrated and slightly greasy in texture but not overly unctuous, thanks to bracing acidity. Very expressive and engaging. Alc: 8.3%. […]

Meadowbank Blanc de Blancs 2018
$85.00I don’t normally like fizzes aged for long periods on lees but this, disgorged after five years, seems to have hit a sweet spot. Still very primary and super intense with pastry notes, butter, apple, almond cream, lavender, honey, grapefruit, lemon, lime, white peach and cinnamon. Fantastic intensity with great vibrancy, the acidity so lively […]

Jean-Louis Chavy Puligny Montrachet Folatieres 1er Cru 2022
$350.00From 0.51 ha of vines in 2 separate plots planted 1993 and 1965, one in the steepest stoniest part close to Blagny which contributes excellent acidity and structure, the other part is from lower down where the soil is richer and this part gives greater richness and depth to the wine. This shows wonderful intensity […]

Crystallum Mabalel Pinot Noir 2024
$85.00Peter-Allan Finlayson avoids using any whole clusters on Mabalel, as the Elandskloof stems tend to be greener and less lignified. Very much a cool climate style, it has impressive poise, focus and elegance, sappy redcurrant and wild strawberry fruit, perfumed 20% new wood, appealing zip and minerality and the structure to evolve gracefully in bottle. Jasper Hill Georgia’s Paddock Shiraz 2024
$90.00Don’t be misled by cliches about the size and style of the Jasper Hill wines. Big though they are, they are fresh and balanced, with lovely natural acidity and waves of fruit and tannin. “Controlled full on”. Ferrous and autumnal notes reside with dark cherry, chocolate, lavender, potpourri, leather, polished wood and a compote of […]

Moreau-Naudet Chablis Les Pargues Vieilles Vignes 2022
$110.00Diam. Les Pargues is a Chablis lieu-dit on a ridge between the Montmains and Vosgros Premiers Crus. It has the same exposure as Vaillons and Montmains, so it’s a handy site. The story goes that it was initially classified 1er Cru (pre-AOC) before being largely abandoned during the war when there was a labour shortage. This meant it missed out on the status it […]

Wild Duck Creek Sparkling Duck Shiraz NV
$80.00Exceptionally rare. A wine that I think embodies this estate like no other, showcasing their ability to make elegant, savoury and very complex wines, not just dark and massive monsters. Dark in colour, but less so than their still shiraz’s, and there is a greater emphasis on tertiary notes. The fruit profile is very complex, […]

Domaine A Petit A Cabernets 2014 Museum Release
$70.00St Emillion inspired, but for me, reminiscent of the haunting, autumnal wines of Pessac Leognan. Beautifully complex aromas of blackcurrant, cranberry, mulberry, blackberry, violets, garrigue herbs, tobacco leaf, mint and cocoa. Pure ripe fruit, supple initially, before the sensual squeeze of chewy, tobacco laced tannins. Very complex interplay of savoury and fruit notes with squid […]
