Don’t be misled by cliches about the size and style of the Jasper Hill wines. Big though they are, they are fresh and balanced, with lovely natural acidity and waves of fruit and tannin. “Controlled full on”. Ferrous and autumnal notes reside with dark cherry, chocolate, lavender, potpourri, leather, polished wood and a compote of black and blue fruits. It’s big, no doubt about it, luxurious and rich with wonderful dripping tannins, black olive tapenade and an incredible sense of freshness and energy. A horizon of length and balance, nothing at all forced or overdone. Decades of supreme pleasure ahead. Crying out for beef, preferably on the bone. One of my favourite wines of the year. ‘This is a great bottling of this famed central Victorian icon. Layers of black and blue fruits intertwine with a mineral-edged undertone, showing aromas of graphite, ferric earth, spices, violets, blackberries and licorice. The palate is seamlessly integrated, with a fine backbone of acidity and almost silken tannins. An excellent wine that balances fruit, earth and vineyard character, all pulled together with a high level of polish. Excellent. Drink or hold.’ 99 points, JS Wine Ratings, August 2025.

‘A wine we are incredibly proud of. True to its sense of place, this Georgia’s Paddock Shiraz does not disappoint. Bright magenta in colour, it keeps delivering. Abundant red fruits are layered with dark plums and chocolate. Soft, chalky tannins build as this well-rounded and balanced wine hides its alcohol beautifully. Plentiful yet vibrant in every glass. Enjoy now, or cellar confidently. High-grade cork sealed | 15.5% alc/vol’ Emily McNally, Jasper Hill – July 2025.

Very deep colour and remarkably vivid considering the presumably long period in wood. There is bright purple towards the rim, fading from the deep blackness of the core, suggesting the inclusion of whole bunches. Intense aromatics, florals, black fruits, sweet and savoury spice. It’s not overly complex at present but the flavours are utterly captivating […]

“We Love Northern Rhone”, Skye Salter told me when tasting through their wines, and it shows, with notes of Charcuterie and coal dust. Otherwise it’s all McLaren Vale. Deep dark fruits, including blackcurrant, not often found in shiraz. Dark cherry, blackberry, violets, savoury spice, fresh compost, cured meats, pink peppercorn, soy, fennel and cardamon. Rich, […]

Of all the wines in the Tyrrell’s Winemaker’s Selection, the Vat 9 shiraz is the most distinctive and stylistically consistent. Every Vat 9 has classic Hunter River Burgundy hallmarks of florality, high tones, medium weight, complex compote of mixed tangy fruits, a fine line of acid and the Tyrrell’s signature of an angular shape. The […]

Deep, dark and very bright purple-red colour, with a lovely detailed aroma of chocolate and herbs, both fresh and dried; floral nuances and red fruits, hints of spices and the palate is very full-bodied and generous with lashings of supple tannins, all in harmony with the great depth of fruit. A complex wine already: it […]
