Don’t be misled by cliches about the size and style of the Jasper Hill wines. Big though they are, they are fresh and balanced, with lovely natural acidity and waves of fruit and tannin. “Controlled full on”. Ferrous and autumnal notes reside with dark cherry, chocolate, lavender, potpourri, leather, polished wood and a compote of black and blue fruits. It’s big, no doubt about it, luxurious and rich with wonderful dripping tannins, black olive tapenade and an incredible sense of freshness and energy. A horizon of length and balance, nothing at all forced or overdone. Decades of supreme pleasure ahead. Crying out for beef, preferably on the bone. One of my favourite wines of the year.
‘This is a great bottling of this famed central Victorian icon. Layers of black and blue fruits intertwine with a mineral-edged undertone, showing aromas of graphite, ferric earth, spices, violets, blackberries and licorice. The palate is seamlessly integrated, with a fine backbone of acidity and almost silken tannins. An excellent wine that balances fruit, earth and vineyard character, all pulled together with a high level of polish. Excellent. Drink or hold.’ 99 points – Ryan Montgomery, James Suckling Wine Ratings. Rated #29 Top 100 World Wines 2025 in James Suckling
Here is a first-rate lesson on soils and what they contribute to wine. Georgia hails from red, iron oxide–rich, ancient Cambrian soils that have brought the most astonishing natural balance in ’24. The boldness we associate with Georgia is there, but so too a well-delivered fineness of expression that seems to belie the 15.5% abv. The fruit is black and ripe, the spices soar, the oak is well integrated and a ferrous minerality adds a brightness and spark to everything. The tannins are firm but still welcoming, and it just gels so beautifully, so resoundingly. 97 points – Jeni Port, Halliday Wine Companion

Established by Ron and Elva Laughton in 1975, Jasper Hill has become one of Heathcote’s – and Australia’s – most revered wine estates. The vineyards sit on undulating hillsides at 330 metres, planted to a narrow strip of ancient Cambrian soils: deep, red, gravelly loams that are naturally low in fertility, exceptionally well drained and perfectly suited to producing low-vigour, intensely flavoured vines.
Everything happens on the estate. The fruit is grown, the wines are made and the bottles are filled at Jasper Hill, under an organic and biodynamic philosophy that has been fundamental to the estate since its beginnings. No synthetic chemicals have ever been used, while composting, inter-row mulching and a focus on soil health encourage remarkable biodiversity and natural fertility. The vines remain on their own roots, and Poussard pruning is now employed to promote vine health and optimal sap flow.
The site does much of the heavy lifting. Warm days and cool nights at elevation preserve natural acidity. The result is a distinctive style: powerful and deeply flavoured, yet fresh, balanced and remarkably pure.
These are wines with both pedigree and personality – unapologetically full-bodied, but never clumsy or overdone. Jasper Hill remains a benchmark for Heathcote and a compelling reminder of just how extraordinary Australian wine can be when great vines, great soils and decades of conviction come together.

From the two oldest blocks on the Bondar-owned Rayner vineyard. The 1960 vines are on clay and limestone; the 1950s, being the major component, on deep sand with ironstone. Andre Bondar is never going to pursue rich styles, but this bottling usually has a little more supple generosity. That’s still true here, with a sultry […]

Hunter Shiraz doing things its own way. Intensely fragrant and wonderfully cool-site in character, with lavender, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, earth, mace and liquorice. Then comes the freshness – tangy red fruits, chalky tannins, brilliant natural acidity and a seriously mouth-puckering hit of limestone minerality. Elegant but far from lightweight, this is all precision, energy and […]

Of all the wines in the Tyrrell’s Winemaker’s Selection, the Vat 9 shiraz is the most distinctive and stylistically consistent. Every Vat 9 has classic Hunter River Burgundy hallmarks of florality, high tones, medium weight, complex compote of mixed tangy fruits, a fine line of acid and the Tyrrell’s signature of an angular shape. The […]

Deep, bright red-purple colour; the bouquet likewise bright and fresh, initially with a high-note of freshly-sawn oak, which dissipated somewhat with time in the glass. The palate is bright, intense and elegantly weighted, just making the full-bodied weight category. It’s quite oaky but has good approachability, medium-long carry, and the tannins are ample and very […]
