Vanguardist Oeno Syrah 2024
$44.00The first release for a syrah in the Botanic Series, following on from the inaugural V label syrah in ’23. Tiny production; about 40% whole bunch. Not sure if one could pick a Vanguardist wine on style regardless of variety, but it feels so. That’s not to say there’s an imposition of making. Not at […]

Rieslingfreak No 12 Flaxman Valley Riesling 2026
$35.00Highly perfumed – kaffir lime, kiwi and rose petal with a cool edge of wet slate. The palate is ultra-fine and satin-textured, all citrus precision and mineral cut, with yuzu and finger lime driving through a steely, focused line. Long, pure and laser-sharp. Flaxman Valley–sourced riesling is really delivering the goods. There’s a little […]

Serrat Grenache Blanc 2024
$45.00Only a single 500L old French oak barrel’s worth of wine, and as far as I’m aware the only grenache blanc from the Yarra Valley. Beautifully composed with citrus blossom, savoury spice, Victoria plum, matchstick, green melon and citrus marmalade. Plump, pure, fleshy and a lovely tension between savoury and fruitiness. Rich in flavour, but […]

Serrat Autres Terres Nenagh Park Chardonnay 2024
$50.00From vines planted at Nenagh Park in 1989. The site is cool, and so’s the wine, but there is an uncommon succulence, no doubt from the wonderful Penfolds 58 clone. Aromas of citrus blossom, savoury spice, a sort of cardamon reduction, lime zest, grapefruit and white peach. Intense, coiled and focused, the most “contemporary” of […]

Bondar Hope Springs Eternal Shiraz 2024
$75.00From the Hickinbotham vineyard, with these vines planted in 1971 to red soils studded with ironstone. It’s an elevated, relatively cool site and certified biodynamic. This was fermented mostly as whole bunches, with a long élevage of almost two years in an old, thick-walled demi-muid. Yes, just one, with 600 bottles produced. Dark plum, blackberry, […]

Domenica Chenin Blanc 2025
$45.00Light yellow, with apple and pear aromatics, a spicy overlay probably from the barrels, a hint of straw, and cashewnut as the wine warms in the glass. Light bodied and crisp, fresh, clean and refreshing, with again that green-apple acidity cleansing the finish. Very appealing and true to variety. 91 points, Huon Hooke – The […]

J&S Fielke Blanc de Blancs 2023
$48.00This comes from the Deanery vineyard in Balhannah, grown organically. Wild ferment, to barrel, unsulphured until just before bottling. The wine remained on lees for 18 months. The ’23 season’s lighter frame gets savouriness built in, and seamlessly. Gingery notes, stewed apple strudel with cinnamon, nashi pear, salted almond and light honeycomb notes. Assured, fine […]

Nocturne Single Vineyard Wilson Chardonnay 2024
$65.00This lovely, supple, subtle wine, while being just that, still has trademark Margaret River fruit weight and drive. Think blossom, white nectarine, purity all wrapped in a Nocturne Chardonnay mineral blanket. Generous, flashy yet restrained with a touch of the 2024 sun. Mineral-edged aromas of lemon zest, grapefruit, struck match, sea spray, wet stones and […]

Nocturne Single Vineyard Sheoak Cabernet Sauvignon 2024
$65.00“The 2024 Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon hails from the Sheoak vineyard in Yallingup, in Margaret River’s northern reaches, and leads from the glass with an abundance of dark fruit, exotic spices and tapenade. In the mouth, the wine is structurally firm, populated by succulent Cabernet fruit, and pliable in texture. There are notes of dried […]

Bicknell FC Lance Old Vine Cabernet Sauvignon 2024
$85.00This is a wine that gets me unreasonably excited about Yarra cabernet. A tightrope walker, risk taker, the excitement coming from how close it gets to the edge. Mulberry fruit and leaf, cassis, cedar, rubbed rosemary. It’s the lithesome way it moves that excites. 142 dozen made. 12.7% alcohol. 97 points – Nick Ryan, The […]

Clarendon Hills Domaine Clarendon Syrah 2023
$35.00A cool year and philosophical evolution have produced a relatively elegant syrah suite in ’23. And this is a fine entry point, sketching out the style. A lovely perfume here, with cool boysenberry, violet, iodine, black leaf tea, nori, lilac and blackberry pastille. It’s compact on the palate, clocking in at modest alcohol and with […]

Gentle Folk Syrah 2024
$45.00Like most of the Gentle Folk portfolio, this evolves over days in much the same way as a living thing, breathing in air and changing shape, opening and unfurling. The fruit is sourced from two of the very best vineyards in the Adelaide Hills: Murdoch Hill and Turnbull. Swathes of blue fruits, including blueberry and […]

Tyrrell’s Vat 8 Shiraz Cabernet 2023
$90.00The outlier in the range, considering that it’s the only blend and a multiregional blend at that, with 35% of the fruit coming from McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s also a genuine blend of styles, not trying to be a Hunter Valley wine, but an emblematic Australian wine, and therein lies its value. It’s not […]

Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon 2022
$145.00“This was a very good vintage in Margaret River after the slightly more challenging ’21. This has the refined elegance and prettiness that is the Moss Wood DNA. The colour is quite pale compared to some previous vintages, but don’t be fooled into thinking this is some shrinking violet. Violets, yes, but plenty more in […]

Riggs & Wiggs Mangerton Vineyard Block 1 Semillon 2024
$35.00The vines at the Mangerton vineyard were planted in 1978 using cuttings from the 1899 plantings on Oakey Creek Road. Block 1, with its clay loam soils and steep, south-facing slope, produces a powerful semillon with impressive flavour depth. Stanton & Killeen Rutherglen Topaque NV (500ml)
$25.00Such a different expression. Topaque’s usually play second fiddle to Muscat, but that should definitely not be the case. Very complex and layered with a lovely tension between the sweet and savoury elements. Florals, honeycomb, salted caramel, grilled nuts, sultanas and savoury spice. It’s somehow lighter than the Muscat, yet shows more vivacity and stuffing. […]
