“Vanguardist-farmed Rende vineyard bush vines, around 55 years old; 60% whole bunch, with about seven weeks on skins; matured in 2200L Slavonian oak. The cool vintage has its say. Refined, fragrant and elegant, but savoury and spicy, too. Distinct nebbiolo/nerello mascalese riffs, more the latter – an increasing theme at this address. Dried cranberry and cherry, freeze-dried raspberry and orange, from dehydrated peel to the bitter orange note in amaro, chinotto, Campari … five spice, clove, green cardamom, white pepper, alpine herbs, sour plum, dried mint, pressed flowers, warm terracotta. It’s finer of feel. Is it lesser for it? Nope. It’s laden with so much flavour and etched with ultra-fine but authoritative tannins and refreshing acidity. This also opens up and holds for days, suggesting a very bright future. So individual; so stunning.” – 97 Points, Halliday Wine Companion – Marcus Ellis

It’s all about McLaren Vale Grenache at the moment, but the Barossa Valley should not be overlooked and Tim Smith’s iteration is one of the best, if not the best value from the entire valley. Incredible aromatics with a compote of English summer red fruits, blueberry, some blackcurrant. sweet spices and an almost Nebbiolo sensibility […]

Four bush-vine vineyards in Blewitt Springs, planted in 1930, ’39, ’40 and ’52 make up 49% of the blend, with the ’22-planted Smart vineyard in Clarendon the balance. A range of ferments, with 37% whole bunch in the final wine and up to six weeks on skins. Pale, pretty, savoury, complex. There’s such detail in […]

From 0.51 ha of vines in 2 separate plots planted 1993 and 1965, one in the steepest stoniest part close to Blagny which contributes excellent acidity and structure, the other part is from lower down where the soil is richer and this part gives greater richness and depth to the wine. This shows wonderful intensity […]

Pale in the glass and engagingly savoury, feeling a little less up-front fruitful than the ’23 at the same stage, but certainly no less for it. More, perhaps. This is savoury, with pressed flowers, dried cranberry, damson and macerated cherries, warm stone, whole spices – fennel seed, clove, cardamom – and a little blood orange […]
