“Vanguardist-farmed Rende vineyard bush vines, around 55 years old; 60% whole bunch, with about seven weeks on skins; matured in 2200L Slavonian oak. The cool vintage has its say. Refined, fragrant and elegant, but savoury and spicy, too. Distinct nebbiolo/nerello mascalese riffs, more the latter – an increasing theme at this address. Dried cranberry and cherry, freeze-dried raspberry and orange, from dehydrated peel to the bitter orange note in amaro, chinotto, Campari … five spice, clove, green cardamom, white pepper, alpine herbs, sour plum, dried mint, pressed flowers, warm terracotta. It’s finer of feel. Is it lesser for it? Nope. It’s laden with so much flavour and etched with ultra-fine but authoritative tannins and refreshing acidity. This also opens up and holds for days, suggesting a very bright future. So individual; so stunning.” – 97 Points, Halliday Wine Companion – Marcus Ellis

“From the Stonegarden vineyard, first planted in 1857 (this from original vines, reworked over time). The ’24 vintage was Glen Monaghan’s last, having since sold the site to Rockford. The second release, and this bottling is already a high watermark for lithe, refined and detailed modern Barossa grenache. A gust of red florals, red and […]

Pale in the glass and engagingly savoury, feeling a little less up-front fruitful than the ’23 at the same stage, but certainly no less for it. More, perhaps. This is savoury, with pressed flowers, dried cranberry, damson and macerated cherries, warm stone, whole spices – fennel seed, clove, cardamom – and a little blood orange […]

Phenomenally complex with tar, English summer fruits, blackcurrant, sweet and savoury spice, cola, blood orange and mixed flowers. It’s very expressive from the aromatics to the finish, the palate, succulent and silky, yet the tannins authoritative. Such a serious grenache, without the loss of sensuality. Long, long, long. Amazing. Norris at Waters Wine Co […]

Grenache has to be one of the most diverse grapes planted in Australia, reflected by the plethora of styles being crafted. Tillie J’s is delightful. Described to us as a Beaujolais style, I thought it somewhere between a Brouilly and Southern Rhone red. Compote of black, bramble and red fruits, with cut flowers, licorice, five […]
