Steven Spurrier was one of the wine trade’s most influential figures. Over the years, he held the roles of wine merchant, buyer, educator and lecturer; and he wrote books, wine courses and over 300 columns for Decanter magazine. He also set up the breakthrough ‘Judgement of Paris’ in 1976. This memoir reflects on Steven’s life, charting the incidents, adventures, ideas and discoveries that formed his wine journey. Along the way, he had the privilege not only to taste the finest wines, but to judge them and work with the winemakers who created them.

Black and bramble fruits, licorice, fennel, cola, rosemary and violets. Sweet and sour fruit, some fruit case spice, seaweed, tobacco and a tension between angular tannins, prickling acidity and pure high […]

Plenty of volume and shape, the fruit succulent and juicy – balanced by darker, savoury elements. So much textural flavour complexity, the wine a shape shifter in the glass. […]

From 0.51 ha of vines in 2 separate plots planted 1993 and 1965, one in the steepest stoniest part close to Blagny which contributes excellent acidity and structure, the other part is from lower down where the soil is richer and this part gives greater richness and depth to the wine. This shows wonderful intensity […]
