Holyman Chardonnay 2024

Only a tiny amount of this wine is made each year, and very little ever leaves Tasmania. It’s a pure, confident expression of site – built to reward patience in the cellar. Aromatically, it opens with white peach, and sweet citrus notes. The palate is taut and zingy, carrying through long on the finish. Oak is seamlessly integrated. A beautifully balanced wine. A beautiful chardonnay from the Stoney Rise estate at Gravelly Beach in the northern Tamar. Light straw with aromas of white peach, grapefruit, lemon, a subtle wisp of struck match, cinnamon biscuits, clover blossom, crushed riverstone, grilled nuts and gentle vanillin oak. This is filigreed and sleekly shaped – with a gorgeous entry of lemon curd and peach – softly spiced and showing a light pithy texture. It’s all about focus and detail, with a briny, minerally drive and flavours that stretch out nicely on the exit. Jeez, it’s great drinking. 96 points – Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion

For this wine, the grapes were specially selected from a small block on our 38-year-old vineyard. They were pressed as whole bunches before going through a natural yeast ferment in 100% new French oak puncheons.

The nose shows white peach with hints of citrus and nougat. The palate is taut and racy in the mouth with a powerful finish. The oak component is well balanced with the weight of the fruit and the tight acid. While it is enjoyable now, it will benefit from aging in the cellar for five or more years. – Joe Holyman, Stoney Rise
