Textural and pithy, with lovely depth of flavor yet still carrying a fine touch of reduction. Aromas of lemon peel, stone fruit, orange blossoms, flint, granite and grapefruit. The palate is mid-weighted, with a bright line of acidity and a textural mouthfeel cut through by high-tension freshness. A delicious chardonnay with real purity, grown on granitic soils. Drink or hold. 96 Points – Ryan Montgomery, James Suckling

Cobaw Ridge Winery was established by Alan and Nelly Cooper in the Macedon Ranges in 1985. It was the first certified organic and biodynamic winery in the region and this is at the heart of the Cooper’s winemaking philosophy – it’s all about the fruit.
The vines are rooted in granitic sandy soil, positioned in a natural amphitheatre 610 metres above sea level. Over the years Alan’s winemaking approach has become more and more minimalist. No cultivation mid row, maintaining the natural grasses by slashing and giving back organic material to the soil.
The vines are rigorously hand-pruned to reduce crop level and ensure quality – vertically trained and managed to enhance fruit exposure to the sun and wind, reduce diseases and promote better, riper fruit.
The grapes are handpicked, destemmed and soft-pressed to ensure full ripe tannins. Hand plunging is used to extract maximum colour and flavour. All wines mature in barriques for 12 to 24 months, with the introduction of 25 to 30% new barriques each year. Not too much new oak so as to let the terrior speak and not the barrel. Sulphur is the only addition.
In Alan’s words, “Everything is done so as to promote and preserve the full integrity of our unique vineyards’ terrior.” These are some of the Macedon’s very best.

The lieux-dit of Les Chevalieres is situated above the village of Meursault. Above is the lieux-dit of Les Luchets, which produces a higher toned, more tensile wine. I can’t help but think that this is ideally situated, in a sense, mid-slope, the perfect aspect in Burgundy. Impossibly complex, with notes of white flowers, lemon, lime, […]

Entirely from a single block, two clones of Chardonnay were sourced from Block 4, which resides on an east-facing slope with views back towards the Clarence House homestead and Mt Rumney. Picked in the first days of April, whole-bunch pressed and allowed to ferment wild in a combination of tank and old French oak puncheons. […]

From a 12-row block of P58 clone planted in ’76. Matured in French hogsheads and puncheons (40% new); 70% mlf. A very bright green gold. Interestingly, this is the most restrained and subtle of Bannockburn’s ’25 chardonnays, and, no surprise, also the most complex. Aromas of perfectly ripened stone fruits, orange pith and lemongrass precede […]

Only a tiny amount of this wine is made each year, and very little ever leaves Tasmania. It’s a pure, confident expression of site – built to reward patience in the cellar. Aromatically, it opens with white peach, and sweet citrus notes. The palate is taut and zingy, carrying through long on the finish. Oak […]
