The La Migoua area is renowned for its geological features and is often studied for its complex sediment patterns. The outcrops of rocks found in this area date back much further than those in the rest of the Bandol winegrowing area. The effect of one tectonic plate sinking beneath another (subduction) can actually be observed here. During the geological formation of the Alps, the lower layers folded themselves over the younger upper layers. The other unusual feature of this area is the huge geological fracture found in Val d’Arenc which is the reason for the outcrops of rock layers dating back to the Triassic age (200–250 million years ago). The vineyard’s parcels are intertwined among this wild landscape of scrubland and pine forest. Producer’s Note
Of the 2020 ‘The 2020 Bandol la Migoua—tasted from foudre—is a bit tarry and rubbery (expected, to some degree, in young Mourvèdre-based wines) but opens up to reveal seductive, ripe notes of blackberries and mulberries. A blend of approximately 55% Mourvèdre, 25% Cinsault, 15% Grenache and 5% Syrah, it’s medium to full-bodied on the palate, concentrated but silky in feel and elegant on the long finish.’ 92-94 Points, Joe Czerwinski, eRobertParker.com, Feb 2023

In the winery the grapes are firstly destemmed, then transferred into small open fermenters to be hand plunged four times a day. This wine is then matured for 12 months in specially imported new to four year old small French oak barriques. […]

The wine is full bodied and powerful, with a generous serving of fine grained tannins that add length, authority and a drying but supple finish. Tremendous persistence and wonderful structure. A great […]
Add to cart Producer: Te MataUsually my favourite wine in the range and one for those in any doubt about the efficacy of blends. A 60/40 blend of Grenache and Shiraz. Essentially a barrel selection of the juiciest and brightest fruit for early drinking, but this will nevertheless cruise through 10 years and plenty more. Expressive, so McLaren Vale with […]
Add to cart Producer: ParalianThe power of blends is clearly evident and this was for me my favorite wine in the Tim Smith line up. The different grapes have complemented each other beautifully. Rich, juicy, hedonistic, fragrant and savory, the Mataro adding smoke, compost and firm, grippy tannins. Controlled power, the shiraz still comes through strongly, a mass of […]
