Barbara Sandrone describes this as a mini Barolo, as do so many Barolo producers when discussing their nebs, but marketing pitches aside, I don’t think that does it justice. You can have too much of a good (great) thing and the Valmaggiore is so elegant, composed and beautiful, without trying to emulate Barolo. Grown in the Roero region, the vineyard is chalky sand, rather than the clay rich soils of Barolo, and it’s this sand that influences. Evocative and intense aromatics of pink peppercorns, roses, cherry, redcurrant and sweet earth. Even across the mouth, so settled and composed, with fresh tobacco, potpourri and very fine, sleek, sexy, mineral tannins. The threads are so fine and teasing, yet dexterous and full of expansive length and power. Incredible wine, and the finest Valmaggiore to date. Waters Wine Co
“The 2021 Nebbiolo d’Alba Valmaggiore is a serious, serious wine that needs time in the cellar to be at its best. It shows the lighter style of Nebbiolo from Roero, but with all the elements dialed up. I especially admire its mid-palate depth and overall resonance. Succulent red cherry, white pepper, cedar, mint and orange peel all take shape in this super-expressive [Nebbiolo].” 94 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous
“Boasting a youthful and saturated ruby/magenta color, the 2021 Nebbiolo D’Alba Valmaggiore offers striking depth in its smoldering perfume of black raspberries, crushed violets, sweet tobacco, and incense. The palate offers a medium-bodied feel, with driving acidity and loads of citrus and orange peel through the finish.” 93 points, Jeb Dunnuck, jebdunnuck.com
