At first quite closed, this has a whole spectrum of citric aromas that slowly open up. Notes of lychee and mangosteen, too. Then comes the wide-screen palate that’s packed with ripe fruit, but still quite tight on the long, very precise finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but better from 2022. 93 Points – James Suckling
Cuvée Théo Riesling comes exclusively from the monopole Le Clos des Capucins (which takes its name from the Capuchin friars who arrived here in 1619), at the base of the celebrated Schlossberg hill. The Clos is well protected from winds by the surrounding hills and by the walls enclosing it. The soils consist of sand, alluvial pebbles and granitic gravel. Here the low-cropping vines typically offer up a supple and pithy Riesling that’s beautifully accessible young—a reflection of these sandy soils. As per all Weinbach Rieslings, this was whole-cluster pressed, fermented without any yeast additions and matured in very old oak casks for 10 months.
From a great vintage for this Domaine, this might be the finest—certainly it’s the most powerful—Théo we have shipped. It opens with white blossom and ripe citrus aromatics, while the palate is deep and juicy with ripe apple, guava, lime and pine needle notes. It’s a layered yet mouth-wateringly crunchy Riesling of surprising body and power. A superb Théo.
97 Points – “Smelling this is like looking into a deep abyss, and someone unfamiliar with intensely mineral dry riesling might feel a bit of vertigo. However, these grapefruit, white-tea and wild-herb aromas really excite us. On the sleek palate this is super-focused with a terrific tannin structure that beautifully matches the crystalline quality on […]
Add to cart Producer: Clemens BuschThe Estate Riesling is sourced from mostly 25-year-old vines grown on granite soils at 650 metres elevation. After approximately 24 hours on skins, the fruit was direct-pressed to two ceramic eggs for fermentation and a year-long élevage with lees. It was then racked to old foudre where it rested before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. […]
Add to cart Producer: RavensworthOne of the best Pewsey Vale Contours yet, the 2016 Riesling characterises both the power and the elegance of the year. There is real weight and amplitude, with a salty/chalky texture, citrus, frangipani, mandarin oil and camphor. Lots of detail and precision and with all its complexity, remarkably easy to drink! Many years ahead of […]
Add to cart Producer: Pewsey ValeIntense, with all the breadth, power and grandeur we have come to associate with Clemens Busch. Full bodied, with citrus, stone fruits, lemon zest, smoke, nettles a mineral puckering close. Full of dry extract, it’s hard to imagine anyone else getting so much “feel” to the palate, whilst maintaining an astonishing level of clarity. Giant […]
