CRFT K1 Gruner Veltliner 2022

$30.00

It’s odd how different CRFT’s three wines are, all classic Gruner Veltliners, yet all entirely different. The K1 is cooler, more discreet, sleek and linear in shape, without the ample bosom of the Longview. Reticent aromatics take a little coaxing, before revealing white peach, melon, mint and apricot. Spicy, salty palate, very fine and sleek, spearing across the mouth. Tropical notes, with melon, pawpaw, plum, aniseed and fennel. Such a measured and aristocratic wine with a fine sandy texture and gentle persistent acidity. Waters Wine Co

The greatest fidelity to variety shown by this swag of grüner: nettle, white pepper, wild pea fronds and citrus balm. Finely hewn, chiselled and almost pixelated of structural detail, from freshness to sandy slake long. A delicious wine that bodes exciting times for the variety in these parts. Scored with encouragement in mind. 95 points – Ned Goodwin, Halliday Wine Companion 2024

The tenth release of our Kuitpo Grüner and our winemaking style has evolved over the past decade. In the early days we fermented in stainless steel tanks using commercial yeast, without solids, malo or oak. Now we wild ferment in tank and oak, leave wild MLF to take its own path and tinker less – it’s the textural style of Grüner that we love.

A nose of citrus and floral notes with honeydew melon and peach. The palate is textural with fine acid, white pepper, lime and pear. Winemaker’s Notes

Producer Profile

CRFT Wines (pronounced croft) was founded in 2012 by winemakers Candice Helbig and Frewin Ries. Sourcing fruit from 10 single vineyards across the Adelaide Hills and Barossa Valley, they make wines from established varietals and relative newcomers. Indeed CRFT are pioneers of Mencia and Gruner Veltliner, their’s unsurpassed in Australia.

CRFT displays the diversity of the Adelaide Hills wine region beautifully, the wines made traditionally and as naturally as possible, sulphur, the only addition. Vineyard definition is key here and the best way to taste the wines is together – to note the very real differences, even though in some cases the vineyards are separated by only a few metres.

All the CRFT wines are exceptional and cannot be beaten for their value for money. The reds, Pinot Noir, Mencia and Shiraz are generous in flavour, with sleek lines, mouthwatering acidity and long savoury tannins. They are energetic and buoyant, compact, coiled and marvelously balanced. The whites too are rich in flavour, with terrific mid-palate stuffing and long frames, carried along by minerals, texture and natural acidity.
