“Overall white wine of the year’ – Tim Atkin Annual Report
“This is a triumph over the elements by a world-class winemaker, with the density and understated power of a Corton-Charlemagne. Complex, layered and deep, it has leesy intensity, garrigue, citrus, yellow apple and rooibos flavours and a long, tapering finish”. – 99 points Tim Atkin
Huilkrans is made from old dry farmed Chenin parcels planted between 1974 and 1989 on a gentle southern slope at 450 m above sea level. There is something very special about this place in the mountains – isolation, old vines, low rainfall, deep red sand over red clay. These big bushvines are wide planted (low density vineyards) with yields usually in the region of 1.5 ton/Ha. In 2022, we had a great yield, over 3 tons per Ha. We’re very happy to be able to bottle Huilkrans again after a two-year hiatus. Huilkrans is a single origin Chenin Blanc wine. It has gained a very strong following amongst Chenin lovers and is considered by critics to be approximately equal to Magnetic North in quality.

Still very reductive […]

The great thing about planting young vines is that you can choose the site and the material purely for the sake of quality wine. Some of our favourite growers have already planted new vines, as will we on our own farm in the coming years. I find the […]

Le Fief du Breil comes from a single, six-hectare biodynamically farmed vineyard, situated on a south-facing slope above the Sèvre river in La Haye-Fouassière. Fief is a term from the Middle Ages which means a piece of land once associated with (and probably owned by) the local Abbey or Duke. This in turn infers quality, as the local […]
