“Denser and more compact than its 2019 counterpart, the NV Extra Brut Les Béguines LC 20 reveals inviting aromas of pear, confit citrus, mirabelle plum and spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated palate that’s vinous and sapid, built around chalky structure and concluding with a penetrating finish. While it can be approached now, a few years’ patience will pay dividends.” 96 points, William Kelley, The Wine Advocate
This is 2020 base with 20% reserve wine from 2019—so two brilliant seasons. Prévost’s 2.2-hectare vineyard, Les Béguines, is in Gueux, 10km west of Reims in the north of Champagne. The soil of Les Béguines is a layer cake of calcareous (Thanetian) sand, over clay, over more calcareous sand. Inherited from Jérôme’s grandmother, the site was planted in the 1960s with an old, slow-growing, less productive rootstock that descends deeply. Les Béguines is close to 100% Meunier, although there is now a small parcel of 10-year-old Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc planted next to the Meunier (these vines represent roughly six per cent of the blend). The vineyard management is organic, with the soils cultivated exclusively by horse and yields kept at balanced levels.
As always, the wine was vinified without any additions, in large format used barrels for 10 months and was bottled unfiltered. Prévost disgorged this release after 18 months on lees and added three grams per litre dosage. In the past, this was always a wine of one given vintage, however, the last two releases have seen some reserve wine included. It’s a game changer—the wines are now even more complex and far more approachable from an early age. Nonetheless, this is a Champagne that’s built for aging.

Only the juice of the first press called “cuvée” is used, which is of the best quality. The wine spends 3 years on lees in the bottle. The dosage is 6 g/l. […]Read more Producer: Gatinois
Chartogne’s delicious rosé is based on a similar blend to the Sainte Anne cuvée, without the reserve wine – instead this is purely from vintage 2018. The base was combined with a little Estate red wine from the vineyards of Les Orizeaux and Fontaines de Saint Thierry. Wild fermentation was followed by élevage in barrels of […]Add to cart Producer: Chartogne-Taillet
This is Fred Savart’s entry level Champagne but it is far from one-dimensional. It is 100% Pinot Noir all from the village of Ecueil, half of which was fermented in mostly neutral barrel with the other half is fermented in stainless steel. The wine only sees partial malolactic fermentation. Fred doesn’t guide the malolactic fermentation, […]Add to cart Producer: Frederic Savart
