Syrah isn’t exactly the varietal that comes to mind when you think of the Yarra Valley, but in the past 12 months some of my favourite wines from anywhere have been Yarra Valley Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. More generous than I’d expected, plusher and the whole bunches play their part, but not overly so. Extremely complex, a compote of red and black fruits, sweet and savoury spice, lavender, violet, geranium, compost and cured meats. Pure mouthfeel, slightly slippery, firming up with mineral, chalky tannins. A feeling of total balance and the threads of the highest quality woven neatly, but pulled not too tight. Absolutely stunning. Waters Wine Co

Bicknell FC is the label of Nicky Harris and David Bicknell, chief winemaker at Oakridge. David Bicknell is one of Australia’s greatest winemakers and we have had many a superb cellared bottle contest between Oakridge and Bicknell FC.
All the fruit is from a close planted vineyard at Gladysdale, planted in 1988. This is an exceptionally cool site, perfect for making fresh, intense and vivid wines. You could not have hoped for a better spot in the Upper Yarra. The site has great diurnal range, warm days and cool nights, and despite the elevation is able to consistently produce full flavoured and fleshy wines due to its rich volcanic soil. Tiny quantities only, with 1.Ha of Chardonnay and 1.5ha of Pinot Noir, with a few hundred dozen made in any given vintage.
Winemaking is simple and classic. Wild unhurried cool ferments, absolutely no additions apart from small quantities of sulphur, ageing in used wood and for the reds, minimal punchdowns. Casks are rigorously topped up and the maturing process is kept short, retaining freshness and a certain structural angularity so well suited to Yarra Valley Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
As always, Bondar’s Violet Hour Shiraz is handpicked from the Rayner vineyard. A blend of block vines, both young and old (some up to 70 years old). Wild fermented naturally with a high portion of whole-bunches and matured in older French oak (no new barrels were used this year). The wine spent six months resting […]
Add to cart Producer: BondarDeep, bright red-purple colour; the bouquet likewise bright and fresh, initially with a high-note of freshly-sawn oak, which dissipated somewhat with time in the glass. The palate is bright, intense and elegantly weighted, just making the full-bodied weight category. It’s quite oaky but has good approachability, medium-long carry, and the tannins are ample and very […]
Add to cart Producer: EisenstoneSourced from a single 2.4ha block of shiraz on Moppa Hill in the western Barossa, destemmed whole berries. Aged for 20 months in 63% seasoned French, 25% new French and 12% seasoned American oak hogsheads. Shawn Kalleske has composed a wonderful contemporary Barossa shiraz here. Compact, with excellent fruit purity, a super-ripe plum and blackberry […]
Add to cart Producer: Laughing JackSuperficially an outsider in the range, coming from classic Heathcote Cambrian soil, known for producing wines of incredible richness and power. But it’s not an outsider, the power harnessed and controlled by the best in the business. Certainly the Heart of Darkness of the range; the richest, most dangerous, darkest and deepest wine. Masses of […]
