Curator Wine Co Hamlets Shiraz 2022

Hamlets Shiraz is made in a complex but juicy style – extremely easy to drink though complex enough to be able to cellar for many years of future enjoyment. Predominantly from three vineyards all planted in the 1950’s in the Hamlets of Vine Vale, Nuriootpa and Ebenezer and then “topped up” with declassified barrels from the CWCo Shiraz blend.

Marq Malbec 2021

A full bodied, richly flavoured wine with intense sweet fruit. Juicy and fleshy with noticeable oak that adds just an element of grip and structure to this otherwise silky soft wine.

Juxtaposed Old Vine Grenache 2021

The emblematic wine of Juxtaposed, as it’s drawn from both the Wait and Smart vineyards. Its style, one of richness, flesh and silken texture run through all the reds and the quality here is incredible, making this quite possibly the best value grenache in Australia. Deep. Sweet cassis, kirsch, cola, aniseed, creamy vanilla, cured meats, cardamon and fennel. But it’s not all about the fruit. As succulent as the palate is there is mushroom compost, earth and minerals. All that lusciousness counts for nothing without some tangy brightness and this has a high acid line, running the length of the palate, wrapped with slickest, juiciest tannins. Pure and vibrant.

Fighting Gully Road Sangiovese 2022

Includes 5% colorino, an old Chianti variety. The wine spent 28 days on skins, then matured in Italian-coopered large casks. Bright, clear crimson colour; it has a delicious sour cherry, raspberry and black pepper blend, the palate harmonious, juicy, and as fresh as a daisy. 96 points & Top 100 Wines of the Year – James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion

Gilbert Pinot Noir 2022

So often too lean or too worked, Orange pinot noir has hit a sweet spot with Gilbert’s 2022. Pretty and floral, with savoury spices, hedge fruits, and tangy rhubarb, plum and English strawberry. Packed with flavour, mineral; lithe and sleek. It’s not silky, there’s too much texture, and for all its lightness, there’s plenty of weight and flesh. A thoroughly complete, and accomplished pinot noir.

Fruit from the Gordon Hills and Borrodell vineyards at 850m to 1030m in elevation; 70/30% whole berries/carbonic maceration. All parcels are separately basket pressed into French oak (15% new). Alpine strawberry, rhubarb and cranberry. Brazilian chilli kiss peppers, goji and rosehip. The carbonic component has elevated the already fragrant perfume and captured Orange’s cool-climate pinot noir spirit. Lithe, slinky and deft on her feet, with swift acidity, exotic florals and elegance of movement across the palate. Structurally sound tannins and a kinesthetic awareness of form. An assured wine and hard to beat at the price. 95 points – Halliday Wine Companion 2024

A Rodda Cuvee de Chais 2021

A blend of 60/22/9/9% cabernet sauvignon/merlot/cabernet franc/petit verdot. Several different parcels of grape varieties, but all wines were pressed to French oak barriques (36% new) for 15 months. While Italian grapes are making headway in Beechworth, this wine reminds you of the classic beauty to be found in the region’s French grapes. The fineness and the detail of cabernet, in particular, is something to behold. A lovely harmony exists here, of plum, forest berries, woodsy spice and dried herbs. It offers sweeping flavours woven into a fine, velvety tannin underlay. So good. 93 points – Jeni Port, Halliday Wine Companion 2024
