Mullineux Syrah 2021

Perfumed and expressive, this South African Syrah opens with black and red fruits layered with lavender, Asian spice and a hint of citrus lift. The palate is supple and flowing, with silky, well-integrated tannins and a vivid core of fruit. Elegant and poised throughout, it finishes long, refined and quietly ethereal.

90% whole-bunch fermentation. Matured for 12 months in 500-litre barrels, before being transferred to 5 000-litre foudre for another 12 months. Red and black berries, olive, fynbos, cured meat and white pepper on the nose while the palate is pure and poised – lovely clarity of fruit, bright acidity and powdery tannins, the finish long and savoury. I like the deep blue and black berry fruit here, with lavender and clove spice. Chocolate, too. Medium-bodied, focused and textural, with a solid tannin structure. Focused and well-balanced finish. Drink or hold. (CN) 93 points, James Suckling
