Lelie van Saron Syrah 2020

A remarkable wine, particularly when you consider the vineyard is barely 20 years old. You don’t need old vines to make great wines, but you do need a great site, and the Bos vineyard in the cool climes of Upper Hemel-en-Aarde is incredible. The soils are of weathered granite, no doubt a defining feature for the wine’s vivid flavours, purity, flow and silken tannins. Wild fermented, with 40% whole bunch and 60% whole cluster and aged for 12 months in neutral, French oak. Medium bodied with notes of blackcurrant, kirsch, blackberry, soy, plum, violets and baking spices. Abundant, fresh, poised and elegant, the finish massaged, coaxed and deep. Beautiful, joyful wine. I love Syrah,” says Natasha Williams, and it shows in the quality of her new release from a single vineyard in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Fermented with 40% whole clusters, it has pepper, violet and clove aromas, red cherry and tangerine flavours, stylish oak and a focused, racy, tapering finish. 2023-28. 93 points – Tim Atkin MW
