Jasper Hill Emily’s Paddock Shiraz 2024

$125.00

One of the enduring, great heroines of the Heathcote wine region; a wine significant in history and beautifully defining the concept of terroir. Inky dark purple and dense in hue – a Heathcote trademark. Taut and focused, far more than its ’24 sibling; Emily isn’t going anywhere too soon. Rather, it’s got time on its vinous mind. Boasts a core of tightly coiled black and blue fruits, blackstrap licorice, vanilla pod, dusty cacao, allspice, crushed fennel seeds and red earth. There’s an energy brewing – you can feel it. Tannins are ripe, in control and all set. All it needs now is time. 97 points – Jeni Port, Halliday Wine Companion

Predominately Shiraz, this full bodied wine is given added dimension by a small yet impactful 7% addition of Cabernet Franc. Picked together and co-fermented, the result is a layered, aromatic profile and richly textured palate. Graphite and leather notes weave seamlessly with the red and black fruits; while herbal characters, woody spice and a touch of mint are lifted by the wines natural acidity. Delicious now but patience will be rewarded. Winemaker’s Note

Producer Profile

Established by Ron and Elva Laughton in 1975, Jasper Hill has become one of Heathcote’s – and Australia’s – most revered wine estates. The vineyards sit on undulating hillsides at 330 metres, planted to a narrow strip of ancient Cambrian soils: deep, red, gravelly loams that are naturally low in fertility, exceptionally well drained and perfectly suited to producing low-vigour, intensely flavoured vines.

Everything happens on the estate. The fruit is grown, the wines are made and the bottles are filled at Jasper Hill, under an organic and biodynamic philosophy that has been fundamental to the estate since its beginnings. No synthetic chemicals have ever been used, while composting, inter-row mulching and a focus on soil health encourage remarkable biodiversity and natural fertility. The vines remain on their own roots, and Poussard pruning is now employed to promote vine health and optimal sap flow.

The site does much of the heavy lifting. Warm days and cool nights at elevation preserve natural acidity. The result is a distinctive style: powerful and deeply flavoured, yet fresh, balanced and remarkably pure.

These are wines with both pedigree and personality – unapologetically full-bodied, but never clumsy or overdone. Jasper Hill remains a benchmark for Heathcote and a compelling reminder of just how extraordinary Australian wine can be when great vines, great soils and decades of conviction come together.
