From Panzano’s upper reaches, Sangió sees a spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts and minimal sulphur dioxide additions – as with all Michael Schmelzer’s wines. It is raised in a combination of concrete and used tonneaux. Discreet yet persistent citrus blossom and brushwood accent underlying rhubarb scents. Streamlined, with slender fruit, it expresses flavours of red currants and red cherry. Dusty tannins grip in this just-ripe annata, and sprightly acidity emphasises their grasp. Floral notes pick up on the finish. 90 Points – Michael Morris, Decanter
