A cool region, a cool season and a very cool wine. It sits nicely and feels unforced, in time, unfurling in the glass. Starts with spiced red cherries, kirsch, blood orange and amaro with some fresh bitter herbs, mint and a touch of forest floor fragrance. The palate finely tuned with feathery tannins, a raw silk feel, alongside plenty of perky acidity, creating a juiciness and refreshment throughout. 95 Points – Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion

Cobaw Ridge Winery was established by Alan and Nelly Cooper in the Macedon Ranges in 1985. It was the first certified organic and biodynamic winery in the region and this is at the heart of the Cooper’s winemaking philosophy – it’s all about the fruit.
The vines are rooted in granitic sandy soil, positioned in a natural amphitheatre 610 metres above sea level. Over the years Alan’s winemaking approach has become more and more minimalist. No cultivation mid row, maintaining the natural grasses by slashing and giving back organic material to the soil.
The vines are rigorously hand-pruned to reduce crop level and ensure quality – vertically trained and managed to enhance fruit exposure to the sun and wind, reduce diseases and promote better, riper fruit.
The grapes are handpicked, destemmed and soft-pressed to ensure full ripe tannins. Hand plunging is used to extract maximum colour and flavour. All wines mature in barriques for 12 to 24 months, with the introduction of 25 to 30% new barriques each year. Not too much new oak so as to let the terrior speak and not the barrel. Sulphur is the only addition.
In Alan’s words, “Everything is done so as to promote and preserve the full integrity of our unique vineyards’ terrior.” These are some of the Macedon’s very best.

“The aromas of this red are rather endless, with rose petals, rose stems, strawberries, sliced oranges, crabapples and hints of white pepper and peaches. Medium-bodied with depth of fruit. intensity and crushed stone flavors. Linear, racy and vibrant, with brightness and energetic length. From vineyards planted in 1932. 11.2% alcohol. Drink or hold.” – 98 […]

Every year, it’s a tussle to decide my preference; Sangreal or Farrside. A warmer, even vintage 2024, without extremes and there seems a certain evenness to the two pinots, they are so well appointed. Another feature of this release is their apparent openness, so much so that I cannot remember these two wines tasting so […]

Les Bousselots is a mid slope vineyard, with clay rich soils. As you would expect the wines are full bodied, dark coloured and with deep soft tannins. Julien’s rendition is one of the blackest from any producer of this vineyard I can remember tasting. Spiced plum, hedge fruits, black cherry and cassis, flecked with sweet […]

Direct from the cool dark cellars of Rippon, and at 10 years old this is drinking beautifully. It’s interesting to taste the estate’s DNA, with no perceptible style changes over the years. As always, an expression of vintage, and 2012 is considered great according to Nick Mill, owner/winemaker at Rippon. Red fruits, cherry, plum, strawberry, […]
