Understated aromatics, but nothing a good swirl and cupping of glass won’t sort out! Black/hedge and red fruits, ruby grapefruit, a little reductive, smokey, alpine herbs, licorice and pink peppercorns. A totally different beast to the Black Springs; deeper and more brooding. Wider in shape, the fruit plusher and very complex, sweet but very tangy, so the spectrum’s more like red cherry, blackberry, redcurrant and cranberry. More savoury, grown up, the baking spices, tar, florals and earthier elements weave with the fruit, acid and tannin. Traviarti’s tannins are different. They are not Piedemontese, and I mean this in a good way. Gripping and mouthwatering, but not bitter and with every single release, harmonised, the month of idling on skins has worked wonders. Still elemental at this stage, ironically the most backward upon release, when one considers this will be the last. At its best when? One of the finest, no question, but in need of some time in the bottle. We’ll miss this. Norris at Waters Wine Co

Of all the wines in the Tyrrell’s Winemaker’s Selection, the Vat 9 shiraz is the most distinctive and stylistically consistent. Every Vat 9 has classic Hunter River Burgundy hallmarks of florality, high tones, medium weight, complex compote of mixed tangy fruits, a fine line of acid and the Tyrrell’s signature of an angular shape. The […]

The 2022 vintage, of which we bought up the entirety of stock that was left, is showing magnificently. 2022 was a cool and wet season, ensuring a very late harvest, excellent for Nebbiolo and the development of long, complex tannins. Aromas of cool and tangy red and hedge fruits, baking spices, lavender and rose, and […]

Another classic Nebbiolo profile, but perhaps more animal, elemental and masculine. Fresh leather, rose, sandalwood, Port wine tobacco, aniseed, blackcurrant, blueberry and dark cherry. Rich and deep, but with no loss of elegance or purity. Interwoven red, blue and dark fruits, sweet balsamic, juicy, not so much as linear, but nevertheless precise, expansive and palate […]

Screwcap. Unusually for a Petit Chablis, which generally comes from the lower-lying sites on Portlandian limestone, the lion’s share of this cuvée is drawn from a parcel of Kimmeridgian-based soil. Yet it’s not necessarily the type of limestone but more the location that makes the difference. The small Defaix parcel is well situated on the […]
