Traviarti Black Springs Nebbiolo 2023

Traviarti’s Simon Grant helped establish this vineyard, which will no doubt be a source of great Nebbiolo. Considering how young the vines are, this is remarkable. 

Highly aromatic – more so than the estate wine – with crushed rose, English summer fruit compote, beetroot and ruby grapefruit. The palate is expansive and finely shaped, with a persistent line of acidity carrying through to finessed tannins. It’s structured, yet the tannins are so polished and integrated you barely notice them. Complex and evolving, with darker hedge fruits, cherry cola, aniseed and a subtle earthy edge. Outstanding value.

 Ripe dark cherry, dark florals and raspberry lead an invitingly aromatic opening, with woodsmoke and earthy paperbark beneath. A swirl of the glass unlocks a saline savouriness along with tar and gentle star anise. The palate is packed with alluring ripe red florals, dark cherry, raspberry and ripe red apple before ribbons of stacked, powdery tannins constrict the mouth for a coiled, precise and floral finish. Classy and perfumed with excellent structure. Fermented in concrete and raised in ceramic for around 12 months.” 94 Points – Tom Kline, Decanter

We established Black Springs vineyard on a friends property at 450 metres on decomposed granite from 2016. Planted to both Chardonnay and Nebbiolo, it’s proving an exceptional site. 2023 is the first vintage kept separate as the maturity of the block has developed (Chardonnay is also Black Springs just forgot to put it on the label).

 Crushed, destemmed, fermented without inoculation in concrete fermenters before being raised in ceramic eggs. Without the interference of oak you see both the purity of fruit and the plush unadorned tannin framework. Intense, silky and harmonious. It has many years ahead of it. Simon Grant – Winemaker
