This is Nebbiolo, but not as you know it. From Manuele Priolo’s extraordinary, near-vertical Anime Nere vineyard in Monteu Roero, this is a wine of remarkable delicacy, perfume and energy.

Pale and luminous in colour, it opens with an intoxicating perfume of wild strawberry, raspberry, sour cherry and rose petals, with hints of blood orange and wild herbs. The palate is beautifully light on its feet yet deeply flavoured, with silken tannins, bright acidity and an almost weightless sense of flow. There’s a lovely tension between delicate red fruit and savoury, earthy complexity, with a long, lifted finish that keeps unfolding.

Elegant rather than powerful, ethereal rather than heavy, this is Nebbiolo stripped back to its most expressive and compelling form. A truly distinctive wine from a remarkable vineyard – and one of the most exciting Roeros we’ve tasted.
