“A red wine that has done great things for the reputation of Grenache in Piekenierskloof, this comes from Bielie and Erasmus van Zyl’s farm and is Eben Sadie‘s version of a Gredos red. Grown on Table Mountain sandstone, it has layers of pomegranate and redcurrant, savoury tannins, very subtle oak and ethereal, seductively floral aromas. A wine that combines weight and lightness of touch.” 96 points, Tim Atkin MW, South Africa Report 2024
Soldaat is 100% Grenache from a parcel of 55-year-old vines in the highland Piekenierskloof Ward (just shy of the Swartland catchment, going north to Citrusdal). The vineyard got its name from the foot soldiers (piekeniers) who once used this area as a lookout. Sadie’s east-facing parcel sits around 780 metres—one of the Cape’s highest elevations—and the soil is decomposed granite. The vines here are unirrigated and still on their own roots.
Eben notes that The Piekenierskloof Pass has firmly positioned itself as the leading location for Cape Grenache, capable of giving vibrant, perfumed wines with lifted red fruit, smoky, spicy notes and earthy minerality. This wine calls to mind the elegant, perfumed Garnachas from Gredos and San Martín de Valdeiglesias in the Madrid highlands, yet with precision and class all its own. And at 13.2% alcohol, it’s entirely different from the heavy, alcoholic wines often associated with Grenache. Crafted from yields of 22 hl/ha, Soldaat ferments and matures in concrete tanks (with 60% whole bunches this year).

The power of blends is clearly evident and this was for me my favorite wine in the Tim Smith line up. The different grapes have complemented each other beautifully. Rich, juicy, hedonistic, fragrant and savory, the Mataro adding smoke, compost and firm, grippy tannins. Controlled power, the shiraz still comes through strongly, a mass of […]
Add to cart Producer: Tim SmithFrom an organic/biodynamic vineyard in McLaren Vale. Beautifully scented, with cherry, blueberry, raspberry, strawberry, lavender, dried herbs and Indian spices. Medium bodied, the sweet fruit tensioned and interwoven with savoury elements and fresh compost. Pumice like tannins and super vibrant acidity. Incredible value. Waters Wine Co About 15% whole bunches, the rest whole berries; […]
Add to cartBeautiful lifted fragrance of lavender, sarsaparilla, cola, sweet cherry, potpourri and blackberry. The finest and most ethereal release ever of this wine, yet utterly different from the pinot-esque examples emanating from McLaren Vale. Silky flow, framed by deft tannins; the sweet red summer fruits counter-pointed by savoury soy and autumn compost. Very long, drawn out […]
Add to cart Producer: SwinneyThe most high toned and ethereal of the Bondar grenache’s, yet with the succulent oomph and juicy power of McLaren Vale. Lifted red fruits, fresh flowers, fresh herbs, woody notes and pink peppercorns. Medium bodied, intensely fruited, but without the weight of the other wines. Angular and perky, the tannins finessed. Beautiful, almost haunting. Norris […]
