One of Australia’s great cabernets. This from a cooler season highlights and accentuates the typical bright red fruits and blue fruit mix, especially on the nose. It’s aromatic and perfumed with an African violet scent. The palate as always is so exquisitely balanced and refined. Since 1989 the cabernet has been augmented with the floral bright fruit of cabernet franc and the darker robust black fruits of petit verdot. The palate delivers with a gentle restraint yet there is power deep within. The chalky tannins define a long and focused finish. A deceptive medium bodied wine that will cellar for many years. 98 points, Ray Jordon.
There’s as much a Moss Wood DNA thumbprint as a regional one here. This shows off violets, cedary/toasty oak (thankfully not too much), chocolate and a slight ironstone character. Fuller bodied yet the palate is smooth and contained with fine-grained, almost silky tannins, plus dabs of sweet mulberries and blackberries with refreshing acidity tying everything together. Rather lovely now but will garner more complexity in time. 96 points, Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion

Cabernet from a north-facing slope on Hans and Anna Orth’s vineyard in Coldstream. 100% whole bunches, matured in hogsheads (20% new). A medium, bright crimson. Ultra cool fruited and fragrant. Aromas of just-picked cherries and blackcurrant leaf together with a hint of cedar lead onto the medium-bodied, approachable, generous and quite delicious palate. Like pretty […]

There aren’t too many truly distinctive Australian wines made from classical varieties, but Josh Cooper’s Cabernet-based wines from Victoria taste like no others. Super-complex aromatics of cassis, blackberry, mulberry, tobacco, soy, lavender and hints of red fruit. Pure, translucent and mineral. Medium-bodied, with notes of cola, black olive, gooseberry and a compote of crushed black […]

Sorrenberg is very Bordeaux, very Paulliac, very bloody excellent. Signature aromatics, you just want to keep your nose in the glass. Cassis, dark cherry, pencil shavings, plum, bay leaf, woodsmoke and sweet earth. Generous, full flavoured and detailed. Plush and incisive, with terrific energy and flow, the tannins grainy, a piqued acidity. Effortless power, it’s […]

Impenetrable yet vivid colour. Gorgeous nose of blackcurrant, kirsch, lavender and a touch of tobacco. Full bodied, with glossy blue and black fruits, cigar box, coal dust, chocolate and cherries. It’s certainly within the Wild Duck mould, but like all their releases since 2020, a new level of vigour and intensity has entered the wines. […]
