At first quite closed, this has a whole spectrum of citric aromas that slowly open up. Notes of lychee and mangosteen, too. Then comes the wide-screen palate that’s packed with ripe fruit, but still quite tight on the long, very precise finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but better from 2022. 93 Points – James Suckling
Cuvée Théo Riesling comes exclusively from the monopole Le Clos des Capucins (which takes its name from the Capuchin friars who arrived here in 1619), at the base of the celebrated Schlossberg hill. The Clos is well protected from winds by the surrounding hills and by the walls enclosing it. The soils consist of sand, alluvial pebbles and granitic gravel. Here the low-cropping vines typically offer up a supple and pithy Riesling that’s beautifully accessible young—a reflection of these sandy soils. As per all Weinbach Rieslings, this was whole-cluster pressed, fermented without any yeast additions and matured in very old oak casks for 10 months.
From a great vintage for this Domaine, this might be the finest—certainly it’s the most powerful—Théo we have shipped. It opens with white blossom and ripe citrus aromatics, while the palate is deep and juicy with ripe apple, guava, lime and pine needle notes. It’s a layered yet mouth-wateringly crunchy Riesling of surprising body and power. A superb Théo.
Pungent aromas, spicy and pumped-up. Intense flavour, firm and slightly plain, with length and style. It’s a great example of a particular style of Tassie riesling. 94 Points, Huon Hooke Showing a touch of honeyed development on the nose, along with red apple and Key Lime (native to south east Asia) pie. Add to cartOne of Australia’s most consistent and best value whites. A great vintage for this wine too. Expressive and concentrated. Lemon, lime, white peach, start jasmine and sculptural acidity. Fleshy fruit, some zest and rind for texture and that Clare Valley zing. Drink over the next 20 years at least. Waters Wine Co Riesling sourced […]
Add to cart Producer: Pewsey ValeIntense and full of character with notes of white flowers, stone fruits, citrus, spice, cherry and blackcurrant. Intense and full of presence, but with a lightness of touch. The spice is more elevated on the palate (clove) and although off-dry, feels drier for all that. Scintillating and mineral as you so often find with Falkenstein, […]
Add to cart Producer: Hofgut FalkensteinDelightfully firm with so much personality and the sensation that you are licking stones in the vineyard! So firm, so pungent, yet so fruity. Gorgeous wine, essence of Riesling and already approachable. Steely finish suggests a long life ahead. Bone dry and very long. 17.5 points, Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com The Schlossberg hill has long been […]
