“Skerpioen comes from one of the Swartland’s most unusual and beautiful sites, a 90-year-old vineyard on a combination of beach sand and bright-white limestone. Marrying equal parts Palomino and Chenin Blanc, the 2024 is slightly broader than usual, but retains its defining sea breeze freshness. Jasmine and wet stone lead you into a sappy, pure, very lightly wooded palate of saffron, waxed lemons and salted almonds. A stunning white that ages majestically too. 2026-38.” 99 points, Tim Atkin MW, South Africa Special Report 2025
Swartland. Named after the abundant native scorpions that make their home here, Skerpioen is an unirrigated 2.4-hectare, 90-year-old vineyard planted half to Palomino and half to Chenin Blanc. It’s just two kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean and overlooks Elands Bay. The soils are sandy and chalky, likened by Sadie to the white albariza of Andalucía. It’s fitting, then, that half the vines are Palomino. This is also one of the coolest parts of Swartland—cool but also extremely dry, with an average rainfall of only about 300mm per year. Eben quips that “if Mad Max had a vineyard, this would be it.” The dryness naturally restricts the yields (the average is only 26 hl/ha) and concentrates the fruit, magnifying the wine’s saline intensity.

Mainly from Ben Lacey’s Branson Road vineyard in Tatachilla, supplemented with fruit from the Minchella family, also in Tatachilla. Predominant steel ferment, with some older oak and amphora, then blended and raised in steel for four months. The ’24 was the best Bondar fiano I have seen, and this sits squarely beside it. Golden apple […]

Sourced from three wildly different vineyards, yet woven together into a blend of remarkable harmony. Incredibly complex and layered, with fresh lemon, lime and mandarin, orange blossom, frangipani, savoury spice and dolmades. Refined and silky, salty and mineral, with a creamy, lanolin-like mid-palate that is pure textural pleasure. A mineral tightening towards the finish draws […]

Made from mostly Garganega, with Trebbiano providing aromatic lift and structure. Quite succulent for a Soave, and softer, broader than the Classico. Melon, almonds, frangipani, lemon, apricot and white peach. Very easy to drink, with a perfect tension of zing and gentle texture to match with food, or not, it really doesn’t matter. Chenin Blanc based with a supporting cast of 14% Clairette Blanche and 6% each of Garnacha Blanca, Semillon Gris and Viognier, it has masses of focus and extract, texture from 60% malolactic, pear, quince and white […]
