“Hemelrand comes from the vines that are planted around Chris Alheit’s winery on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge and is an intriguing cuvée of Chardonnay, 28% Roussanne, 18% Chenin Blanc, 17% Verdelho and 1% (very perfumed) Muscat. Featuring some botrytisaffected grapes caused by the rains in 2023, this has pear, orange zest and fresh grape flavours and some lees-derived texture. 2024-29” 93 points – Tim Atkin MW South Africa Report 2024
Hemelrand Vine Garden is a unique vineyard that produces a unique wine. The idea is to bottle the wine just as the vineyard produces it, effectively creating a white field blend that changes every year depending on the vintage conditions. This way we have one place expressed by a few different grapes, changing as the season dictates. Hemelrand continues to fulfil its promise of excellence, showing increased depth and nuance year- on-year as the vines mature.
Hemelrand it is situated on the cold and windy Hemel & Aarde Ridge at 360 meters above sea level on gravelly clay and Sandstone. The vineyard was planted in 2010 to Chardonnay, Roussanne, Verdelho, Chenin blanc, and Muscat Blanc a petit grain. However, as mentioned, the proportions of the different grapes produced significantly varies each vintage. Viticulturally speaking, this is a marginal site, the upside of which is slow ripening with high natural acidity.

Despite being a single vineyard and not a blend like the Montesei, there are similarities. Wildly complex, with white flowers, honeysuckle, lemon zest, grapefruit, white peach, orchard fruits and mustard seed. Deep and focused with greater amplitude and a peacocks tail of flavour and texture. The palate is at once succulent and light on its […]

69% Sauvignon Blanc and 31% Semillon. Matured for 10 months in 500-litre barrels, 20% new. Subtle aromatics of peach, nectarine and blackcurrant plus a little vanilla and spice. The palate shows excellent fruit concentration with a creamy texture and well-integrated acidity. Polished, rich and round. Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 94/100

Chenin Blanc from a Paarl vineyard planted in 1956. Matured in neutral 600-litre barrels for 10 months. Leesy, flinty notes before peach, soft citrus, orange, ginger and other spice on the nose. Great depth of fruit, zesty acidity, the finish lightly grippy in texture and saline in flavour. Alc: 13.28%. 95 Points – Christian Eedes, […]

The 2021 Hemelrand Vine Garden is one of Chris Alheit’s biggest successes and encapsulates everything great about his wine. Initially quite neutral, it reveals wondrous sea spray, honeysuckle, Provençal herbs and hints of powdered chalk on the nose. The palate has exquisite balance, very cohesive and intense, yet the acidity keeps this so fresh with […]
