A tiny 0.23Ha plot. First slope of Beaune, next to Clos des Mouches. Top of the slope planted with Chardonnay. Vines aged 37 years. Vertical press so pressing is very slow. Aged on only fine lees. 10% new oak.
‘There is one barrel of the 2021 Beaune Clos des Aigrots 1er Cru Blanc this year whereas usually there are five. It has an attractive, well-defined bouquet with dried honey, grilled walnut and light fumé scents. The palate is well balanced with fine depth and more complexity than Lafarge’s Meursault with a judicious touch of spice on the finish. Worth seeking out. Drink 2023-2038. Tasted Jan 2023’ (89-91) points, Neal Martin, Vinous
‘Notes of pear, peach, white flowers and buttery pastry introduce the 2021 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Aigrots Blanc, a medium-bodied, taut and racy wine, of which only one barrel was produced.’ 90-91 points, William Kelley, The Wine Advocate Feb 2023
‘One barrel only. Ripe fruit, a touch of bacon fat, then white stone fruit across the palate. Surprising depth behind with excellent acidity. Not quite a classical balance but there is a lot of wine here. Promising. Drink from 2025-2029. Tasted: October 2022.. 89-91 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

Entirely from a single block, two clones of Chardonnay were sourced from Block 4, which resides on an east-facing slope with views back towards the Clarence House homestead and Mt Rumney. Picked in the first days of April, whole-bunch pressed and allowed to ferment wild in a combination of tank and old French oak puncheons. […]

Tangy and zesty with citrus, grapefruit, white peach, jasmine and pear. A wine that ensures that you’re tasting the south, full flavoured and rich, but perhaps slightly more controlled and linear than the rest of the range. Yellow fruits begin to emerge on the palate, but are kept very much in check by the lavish […]

A great vintage for By Farr Chardonnay, although every vintage seems pretty great! The lusciousness and richness is dialled up, without any loss of freshness. Creamy with cashew, yellow peach, spring jasmine, wood spice and nougat beautifully interwoven. A wine for flavour fetishists, utterly palate coating. Textured, with dry extract – the mid palate, bursting […]

Screwcap. Unusually for a Petit Chablis, which generally comes from the lower-lying sites on Portlandian limestone, the lion’s share of this cuvée is drawn from a parcel of Kimmeridgian-based soil. Yet it’s not necessarily the type of limestone but more the location that makes the difference. The small Defaix parcel is well situated on the […]
