For the first time, this includes Syrah from a Noordhoek vineyard planted in 2013 as well as from the usual tiny Fish Hoek plantings. 50% whole-bunch fermentation. Matured for 10 months in foudre and neutral 500-litre barrels. Hugely evocative aromatics of red and black berries, floral perfume, fynbos and pepper. The palate is extraordinarily well delineated and the epitome of “energetic.” A wine of striking poise – succulent fruit, plenty of drive and ultra-fine, powdery tannins, the finish bone-dry. Alc: 13%. 98 points – Christian Eedes, winemag.co.za
Made from two Syrah vineyards, including a new parcel near Cape Point Vineyards, this cuvée includes around 50% whole cluster. It has a very perfumed nose with raspberry, wild strawberry, Dorset plum, and spice-box notes, evolving into more floral aromas over time. The medium-bodied palate is full of crunchy red berry fruit and fine backbone, leading to an impressively structured yet elegant, saline finish. 94 points – Neal Martin

Col McBryde told me that he liked to drink Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo whilst at home and their influence is clear. Expressive with kirsch, lavender, pink peppercorns, cassis, blackberry, cocoa, mint, fresh compost and a ferrous quality not always present in Clare shiraz. Medium bodied and mouthwatering, the fruit picked perfectly ripe. Very pure, deep […]

Exceptionally rare. A wine that I think embodies this estate like no other, showcasing their ability to make elegant, savoury and very complex wines, not just dark and massive monsters. Dark in colour, but less so than their still shiraz’s, and there is a greater emphasis on tertiary notes. The fruit profile is very complex, […]

This is (just) my pick of the trip in 2019… Ginger and violet aromas segue into a palate of remarkable grip and persistence, with energetic acidity and a savoury, satisfying finish. 97 points – Tim Atkin MW The deep GRANITE soils on this Jakkalsfontein farm allow for deep root growth and a larger natural […]

Perfumed and expressive, this South African Syrah opens with black and red fruits layered with lavender, Asian spice and a hint of citrus lift. The palate is supple and flowing, with silky, well-integrated tannins and a vivid core of fruit. Elegant and poised throughout, it finishes long, refined and quietly ethereal. 90% whole-bunch fermentation. […]
