Pinot noir and chardonnay are what we would usually associate with the Farr family, but their shiraz is amongst Australia’s best and most singular; a great site expression. Rich, concentrated, seamless and controlled. Extremely complex and with a flavour profile all it’s own. Smoked paprika, red capsicum, curry leaf and fenugreek counter the compote of red, black and hedge fruits. There is great tension between the sweet and the savoury, with wave after wave of luxuriousness and decadence. Fresh and intense, it’s depth belies a lightness of touch and long velvety tannins. A truly wonderful shiraz. Waters Wine Co
The ‘21 Shiraz is a bit of a shape shifter. Initial notes suggest a deep, velvet wine, full of black fruit and spice. As the wine opens up there is a brightness to it, a summer pudding type fruit expression of berries and cream. More spice comes through, black olive tapenade, it’s rich yet savoury. There is a note of whole bunch, that green zone crunch, tang and lift and it finishes with such a pure crack of pepper; pink, campot and some white pepper too. Endlessly intriguing and mouthwatering. Winemaker’s Notes
All fruit is hand-picked from the VSP trellising, with 20 per cent left as whole bunches in the fermentation. Most years we co-ferment between 2 and 4 per cent viognier with the shiraz, the date determining whether or not the former is co-fermented and bled back. It is a natural fermentation, with the fruit remaining in the tank for 19 days before pressing. Shiraz sees 18 months in French oak, 20 per cent being new, and is bottled under vacuum.
Shiraz fruit comes from the original By Farr vineyard, planted in 1994. It lies on a north-facing slope, and the red volcanic soil has a base of limestone with deep-set sandstone.

Producer: By FarrWith fruit sourced from Greenock, Marananga and Moppa, Jack’s Shiraz has a lot to offer for those that seek a classically styled Barossa shiraz at a sharp price point. Abundant plum and dark cherry fruits, baking spices, licorice, dark chocolate and earth. Tight, fine tannin support and a deep, savoury resonance to its tail. 91 […]
Add to cart Producer: Laughing JackExceptionally rare. A wine that I think embodies this estate like no other, showcasing their ability to make elegant, savoury and very complex wines, not just dark and massive monsters. Dark in colour, but less so than their still shiraz’s, and there is a greater emphasis on tertiary notes. The fruit profile is very complex, […]
Add to cart Producer: Wild Duck CreekAre blends better than single varietals? This Cabernet Syrah would certainly stoke the fires of debate, and I would have loved the opportunity to taste the unblended varietals. Very refined, in the claret vein, balanced poised, powerful and graceful. Stunning flavours of violets, plum, blackcurrant, raspberry, tobacco and cream. Terrific shape, across an even plane, […]
Add to cartDeep, bright red-purple colour; the bouquet likewise bright and fresh, initially with a high-note of freshly-sawn oak, which dissipated somewhat with time in the glass. The palate is bright, intense and elegantly weighted, just making the full-bodied weight category. It’s quite oaky but has good approachability, medium-long carry, and the tannins are ample and very […]
