Pinot noir and chardonnay are what we would usually associate with the Farr family, but their shiraz is amongst Australia’s best and most singular; a great site expression. Rich, concentrated, seamless and controlled. Extremely complex and with a flavour profile all it’s own. Smoked paprika, red capsicum, curry leaf and fenugreek counter the compote of red, black and hedge fruits. There is great tension between the sweet and the savoury, with wave after wave of luxuriousness and decadence. Fresh and intense, it’s depth belies a lightness of touch and long velvety tannins. A truly wonderful shiraz. Waters Wine Co
The ‘21 Shiraz is a bit of a shape shifter. Initial notes suggest a deep, velvet wine, full of black fruit and spice. As the wine opens up there is a brightness to it, a summer pudding type fruit expression of berries and cream. More spice comes through, black olive tapenade, it’s rich yet savoury. There is a note of whole bunch, that green zone crunch, tang and lift and it finishes with such a pure crack of pepper; pink, campot and some white pepper too. Endlessly intriguing and mouthwatering. Winemaker’s Notes
All fruit is hand-picked from the VSP trellising, with 20 per cent left as whole bunches in the fermentation. Most years we co-ferment between 2 and 4 per cent viognier with the shiraz, the date determining whether or not the former is co-fermented and bled back. It is a natural fermentation, with the fruit remaining in the tank for 19 days before pressing. Shiraz sees 18 months in French oak, 20 per cent being new, and is bottled under vacuum.
Shiraz fruit comes from the original By Farr vineyard, planted in 1994. It lies on a north-facing slope, and the red volcanic soil has a base of limestone with deep-set sandstone.

Producer: By FarrVery deep colour and remarkably vivid considering the presumably long period in wood. There is bright purple towards the rim, fading from the deep blackness of the core, suggesting the inclusion of whole bunches. Intense aromatics, florals, black fruits, sweet and savoury spice. It’s not overly complex at present but the flavours are utterly captivating […]
Add to cart Producer: Standish Wine CoThere is a ‘brilliance’ to the colour of this wine, really purple with a red hue. Taken from four sites, 60% of the blend comes from the south of Heathcote and the remainder from the northern sites. Combination of American and French oak, 45% being new. Intense aromas of bright red fruits, chocolate and strawberry […]
Add to cart Producer: Wild Duck CreekAs always, Bondar’s Violet Hour Shiraz is handpicked from the Rayner vineyard. A blend of block vines, both young and old (some up to 70 years old). Wild fermented naturally with a high portion of whole-bunches and matured in older French oak (no new barrels were used this year). The wine spent six months resting […]

Aged for 20 months in 63% seasoned French, 25% new French and 12% seasoned American oak hogsheads. Shawn Kalleske has composed a wonderful contemporary Barossa shiraz here. Compact, with excellent fruit purity, a super-ripe plum and blackberry […]
