Apart from the beautiful 904 and the magisterial 890, Vina Arana is the most “classic” and traditional of La Rioja Alta’s wines. Expressive aromatics, indeed the most complex of this release. Blueberry, cassis, blackberry, dark cherry, five spice, Mediterranean herbs, vanilla and unlit cigar. Rich, full bodied and creamy. Very complete and balanced, interwoven flavours and layers, effortless precision. Claret like in its poise and drinkability, the curves and line of Barossa shiraz and the haunting, sensual quality of Burgundy. Immensely beautiful, very long carry and fine lacy tannins. Shall be very long lived. Waters Wine Co
Three years in barrel and three in bottle. This has amazing aromatics: sweet blackberry and black cherry fruit with dried herbs, tar and spice, as well as some hints of vanilla and coconut, and sweet tobacco, too. The palate is juicy and supple, but also quite profound, showing cherries, berries, spice, sweet herbs, some cedar and coconut from the oak, and a lovely sense of harmony and precision. It’s a ripe wine, but shows such complexity and focus, with everything pulling in the right direction. I’m just so impressed with this wine: in its style – classical Rioja – it is just about perfect, and is beginning to enter a very long drinking window. So complex and layered and refined. 96 Points – Jamie Goode, Wine Anorak
Few would dispute that La Rioja Alta is the leading quality-focused producer in Spain’s most famous wine region. Since the coming together of five growers to form the estate 130 years ago, they have produced some of the most highly regarded and longest-lived examples of Rioja. These superb wines are ready for consumption on release, but will keep many more years in bottle – decades in some cases.

The stamp of Marcoux is on all their reds, and it’s a delight to taste them together. The flavour and textural profiles are similar, and here we have the pinnacle; deeper, concentrated, woven complexity and lacy structure. Vivid and intense, with an immediate presence. Extremely complex nose of red fruits, brambly fruit, petrichor, campfire, violets […]

A very rare wine of utmost intensity and exceptional quality, rewarding careful cellaring. Duck Muck was first made by a stroke of luck. Some super-ripe Shiraz was picked from Wild Duck Creek’s Original Vineyard and made into wine, which didn’t quite fill a barrel. The barrel was then topped up with Alan’s Cabernet Pressings, being […]

The wine is full bodied and powerful, with a generous serving of fine grained tannins that add length, authority and a drying but supple finish. Tremendous persistence and wonderful structure. A great […]
Add to cart Producer: Te MataSavory and complex with dried orange peel, cedar and plenty of sweet spices, walnuts, caramel, dried mushrooms and pine needles. Shows maturity here, with a medium body and superb freshness. Incredibly long finish with lots of truffle and walnut. Lasts over a minute. Very complete now, but you can still hold it. 95 points – James […]
