Mari Magno is the new, first-level Pinot Noir label. This year’s wine is based on fruit from POCW’s échalas (staked, bush-vine, co-planted) block, topped with fruit from the neighbouring young-vine block. It has had an extra 12 months in bottle because the team wanted to learn what this extra time would bring to a wine from these vines. Now we have the answer: it’s delicious! Expect a bright, juicy wine with layers of sweet fruit and plenty of aromatic complexity from its extra year in the bottle. In the future, Mari Magno will be a label that will allow the team at POCW to experiment and to declassify young-vine parcels, trial ferments, etc., that don’t make it into the top label but still justify bottling under Place of Changing Winds.
On the name: Mari Magno is Latin for rough seas. Those who want to take a deep dive into the inspiration for this label might Google the words Suave, Mari Magno, taken from De Rerum Natura (On the Nature of Things)—that great work of the Roman poet and philosopher, Lucretius. Simply put, the vineyard can at times seem like a ship tossed in wild seas, with nature throwing down challenge after challenge (as depicted by some of the elements on the label). At other times, thankfully, the sailing can be a lot smoother!
Alcohol: 13.5%. Closure: Diam.

Beautiful pinot noir from Castle Rock, tasted alongside several older vintages, affirming their great aging potential. A difficult hot year 2023, it’s had to believe that such as pure, supple and translucent wine could be forged from such difficulty. Medium bodied, with the black and hedge fruits mashed with licorice, mace, fennel, pink peppercorns and […]
Add to cartAnother real success is the 2020 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens. Exhibiting aromas of dark berries, cherries, plums, exotic spices and peonies. It’s full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with a multidimensional core of fruit, lively acids and fine, powdery tannins, concluding with a long, perfumed finish. A feature of Farrside is its combination of sweet and savoury spice, flowers and flavoured tobacco. An extremely exotic and singular wine, 2022 sees its uniqueness in the extreme. Fenugreek, cumin, violets, lavender, Turkish tobacco, red fruit compote and blackberry. Prickling with acidity, edgier and more angular than recent vintages, the Farrside’s savoury side on […]
Read more Producer: By FarrThe 2021 Toolangi Pinot has a nice array of expression so early here that’s good to see! Rose petal spiced plum and strawberries with some crushed nutmeg on the nose. The palate exhibits similar flavour spectrum with some nice density to it, trademark Toolangi tannin to close but its fresh and ready to go! Fruit […]
