Vinya Vella Grenache 2022

Tasted alongside the superb, burly 2021, the differences of vintage plain to see. Beautiful aromas, indeed, more lifted than the 21 with sweet and savoury spices, lavender, violets and a compote of sweet and tangy red, black and briary fruits. Medium to full boded with a lovely poised silken flow, the whole bunch tannin guiding the rich flavours and lengthening the palate. More linear and precise than the previous vintage, finer wine to be sure, the weave of tannins tighter and more gripping. A fitting follow up to the lovely 2021 release, here 33 per cent whole bunches and matured for 11 months in old oak puncheons. Dreamy red cherry, satsuma plum and mulberry fruits with dabs of exotic spice, amaro herbs, cola, pressed wildflowers, ginger cake, dried citrus rind, char siu and earth. Silken and wonderfully detailed with a gorgeous ginger spice, sensual fruit core, perfectly judged whole bunch work and a long, balanced, savoury exit. 95 points – Halliday Wine Companion

Like the best Barossa of yesteryear.Bottom of Form 2022 was a mild season starting with good winter and spring rains, but overall warm and sunny enough to ripen our gnarly old vines to where we wanted. The combination of old vines and deep sandy soil impart a varietal character to the wine, with particularly lifted aromatics and persistent length.
