Classic Barossa, classic. Blackcurrant, mint, chocolate, glace cherries, ferrous, blackberry, maple and sweet raspberry. The oak is a little more evident here, and the fruit is fleshy and succulent. Pure and deep, compact and precise, and I wish I had decanted this before drinking. Very fine, with Nutella and savoury spice-laden tannins that tighten and grip towards the close. As so often at this stage of evolution, the Lyndoch is more backward and elemental than the Springton and still needs a few more years to come together. Beef on the bone cooked over coals. Waters Wine Co
Deep red, almost crimson in colour. Dense aromas of plum, black pepper, black currant, nutmeg, and a touch of smokiness. Aiming for savouriness rather than fruitiness here and showcasing elegance rather than robustness. Supple, yet very much present tannins with fairly fresh acidity. Pleasant mouthfeel with a long, persistent finish. Drinking well now but will most likely gain another dimension after some cellaring. Winemaker’s Notes
Syrah sourced from a 1997-planted vineyard farmed by Tom Kolovic in the Southern Barossa parish of Lyndoch; wild ferment and matured in old oak, bottled without fining or filtration. Deep crimson with magenta flashes in the glass. Packed with notes of satsuma plum, blueberry and black cherries undercut with hints of baking spices, dark chocolate, licorice, purple flowers and earth. Elegant and long on the palate with a swoosh of cedar, an array of spice and fine pure fruits. Finishes with flexing, granitic tannins and the promise of a strong cellaring future. Very good indeed. 95 Points – Halliday Wine Companion
