“2019 is the first of a triumvirate of very good vintages, following the forward, frisky and imminently approachable 2018’s. To make recent comparisons, 2019 is dense of extract with a bulwark of firm, marked tannins. It is frequently compared to 2013, by others to 2016.  Suggesting the platform for classically aligned, highly age-worthy expressions of top crus, including Barbaresco.
As Walter Speller for Jancis Robinson (.com) poses, ‘…can Barbaresco really be that lucky? Producers themselves seem to think so.’
Cascina della Rose, always a proponent of skeletal, fine boned tannins and pixelated freshness with red fruit allusions shimmering beneath, has crafted two exceptional iterations of the denser Rio Sordo and the more transparent Tre Stelle, a unique monopole higher on the Rio Sordo site, comprised of thin top soils over blue limestone.
2021 on the other hand was a vintage of extremes. Very good, somewhat ironically, as a result. There was abundant water in the ground and despite torrid heat, diurnal shifts were radical, serving to retain natural acidity in the grapes. Frost, as is so common in a climate challenged world, served to mitigate abundance. The result is a raft of wines that are concentrated and juicy of fruit, paradoxically primed by an uncanny level of verve. Expect ripeness and wonderful energy, and already being heralded as potentially the greatest vintage in the last two decades.”

“The 2019 Rio Sordo is an absolute stunner, boasting precision and a pristine quality that keeps you wanting more. Seamlessly combining finesse and structure, the vibrant youthfully austere palate delivers crushed red cherry, white pepper, licorice and blood orange set against a backbone of fine-grained tannins, while a hint of almost salty mineral lingers on the close. Fresh, lifted elegant nebbiolo. All declassified fruit from the iconic Rio Sordo vineyard in Barbesco vinified and aged in stainless steel to maintain the brightness of fruit. Elegant floral notes of rose and violet; fruity with notes of sour cherries and wild berries, vanilla, leather and tobacco. Dry and captivating, with fine and silky tannins, remarkable elegance and persistence.
