Grenache has to be one of the most diverse grapes planted in Australia, reflected by the plethora of styles being crafted. Tillie J’s is delightful. Described to us as a Beaujolais style, I thought it somewhere between a Brouilly and Southern Rhone red. Compote of black, bramble and red fruits, with cut flowers, licorice, five spice and Sichuan pepper. Juicy, sweet, tangy and angular, with slippery tannins and a touch of firmness around all that whole bunch looseness. I think this actually merits a year or two in the cellar, to let some of the drama subside and components integrate. Very exciting wine, not just for drama, but for the masterful take on this variety and the pushing of boundaries. Waters Wine Co
Sourced from the Watkins vineyard in Langhorne Creek. Whole-bunch fermented and matured in neutral oak. A light, bright crimson red. You’d be hard pressed picking this as a Langhorne Creek wine in a lineup given its light, bright, perfumed aromas and medium-bodied, gently mouth-filling and sappy palate. An excellent follow up to the successful project 5255 wine from ’22. 94 points – Halliday Wine Companion
