A very rare wine of utmost intensity and exceptional quality, rewarding careful cellaring.
Duck Muck was first made by a stroke of luck. Some super-ripe Shiraz was picked from Wild Duck Creek’s Original Vineyard and made into wine, which didn’t quite fill a barrel. The barrel was then topped up with Alan’s Cabernet Pressings, being the only wine available to David (Duck) at that time in 1994. The resulting wine was given away to their best customers. What David didn’t appreciate at the time was how the blend of these two vineyards, and that specific style, was going to create a wine that was not only of world class quality, but gain cult status all over the world.
With a few refinements, Duck Muck is possibly the hardest wine for Wild Duck Creek to make. The vineyards are meticulously attended to. Cane pruned, shoot thinned, and fruit thinned to try and achieve the perfect balance in any particular vintage. The fruit is then picked and partly destemmed into small open top fermenters. The Original Vineyard Shiraz has 30% whole bunches left in the ferment. The wine is then gently basket pressed into 100% new Dominique Laurent barriques and matured for up to 27 months. Duck Muck, when bottled, is extraordinarily intense, with layers of texture, a wonderfully complex aroma, and incredible length and depth. Winemaker’s Notes

Billie and Erasmus van Zyl’s plantings at 642 metres in painterly Piekenierskloof supplies the raw material for this enticing, high-altitude Grenache from sandstone soils. Intensely fresh, mineral and chiselled, it combines raspberry and redcurrant flavours with sinewy tannins and a long, satisfying finish. Drink 2024-30. 96 points – Tim Atkin MW 86% Grenache […]

The 2019 Vina Ardanza is a highly impressive, full-bodied blend of 80% older-vine Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha from two different parts of Rioja grown at the same altitude. The producer’s own American oak was used to age the Tempranillo 36 months and the Garnacha 30 months, 20% new. The fruity nose of black cherry and […]

The 2020 Clos Mogador comes from a very challenging vintage in Priorat, a year with lots of rain and some fungus problems that are very unusual in the zone, which is usually very healthy. They bought a further four hectares so they could keep the volume despite the difficulties with mildew. The wine is more […]

60/40% Marmont vineyard grenache/Paralian-owned Springs Hill vineyard shiraz. The most fruit-forward and ‘primal’ barrels are selected for this. This is delightfully upper mid-weight, joyously fragrant and supple, redolent of cherry juice, roses in bloom, musk, sumac, cinnamon, the gently creeping darker fruit and spice of shiraz latterly joining the grenache lead, adding a little growl […]
