The 2020 Clos Mogador comes from a very challenging vintage in Priorat, a year with lots of rain and some fungus problems that are very unusual in the zone, which is usually very healthy. They bought a further four hectares so they could keep the volume despite the difficulties with mildew. The wine is more tannic and a little astringent despite now having any time in barrels anymore; starting this year, it matured exclusively in 2,000-liter oak foudre, and the impact of the wood is milder. A very good result, it’s powerful but has good balance. The vintage is more tannic, and the quality of the tannins is not the same as those from 2019, as they couldn’t wait for better tannins because of the risk of losing acidity and freshness. The 2020 vintage was a difficult vintage. In spite of the resulting lower-than-normal yields, there is no doubt that the move towards working with regenerative agriculture and promoting biodiversity in the vineyards is creating more life and energy in the vineyards is paying off in the final product. It was a lot of fun to taste this wine and keep going back to it throughout the course of an evening, each time discovering something new in the glass. Though youthful, this wine is extremely approachable and enjoyable now, fresh and bursting with ripe red and black berries. The texture is plush voluptuous, full and the tannins are firm but not overpowering. There is even a touch of leather, spice, and earth which balances out the fruit so beautifully. There is no doubt that this wine will become more complex with time. Importers Notes
It is many years since I first visited Clos Mogador but I still remember great wines, good people and interesting reflections. One on them was something like this – “each wine has its own story”. … My first Mogador was a ’98 and since then, their wines have always been on our wine list. I always try to convey to our customers this intangible bond between our two families. The 2019 vintage expresses all this. The vegetative cycle was marked by an extreme month of June which was compensated for with all the criteria needed for the harvest. The wine shows ripeness and finesse. On the nose we can detect a bouquet of cherries, bramble fruits and fine, dark balsamic qualities including juniper, cloves and pepper. The moderately deep profile full of cocoa and Tonka beans shows elegant notes of ageing. The creamy mouthfeel presents sweet, fruit tannins with more pronounced red fruit flavours than on the nose with hints of violet. – Alberto Redrado

Add to cart Producer: A RoddaIntensely complex and aromas of blueberry, sweet raspberry, dark cherry, blackberry, lavender soap, lavender wood and five spice. Boom! So much energy and muscle, super tight, tense and coiled. Even the tannins are complex, sleek, firm and finally, powdery. Deep core and not the concentration of sweet fruit, but a deep core of savoury, spicy, […]

Read more Producer: PicardyThe power of blends is clearly evident and this was for me my favorite wine in the Tim Smith line up. The different grapes have complemented each other beautifully. Rich, juicy, hedonistic, fragrant and savory, the Mataro adding smoke, compost and firm, grippy tannins. Controlled power, the shiraz still comes through strongly, a mass of […]
