Semillon grown on sandier soils is often nervy and lacking in mid palate richness. The Short Flat vineyard is the Montrachet of the Hunter Valley. It produces a Semillon that encompasses the entire spectrum of flavour and texture associated with the style.
The 2014 Vat 1 is, without doubt, the benchmark Semillon to come out of this celebrated vintage. Beautiful aromas of citrus oil, lemon, honey and orange blossom. The palate is juicy, and despite its energy and vigour, the wine is very easy to drink. The Vat 1’s structure has never been overt, the acid line folded into the layers of fruit. And the hallmark of the 2014 Vat 1? The length. Prodigious length that keeps on driving and sets itself apart from anything else in the Hunter Valley. WWC, June 2019
Now cruising towards the first stage of maturity; the balance of the mouthfeel is exceptional. It is this that will underwrite the long period as the changes of age become less obvious, but incrementally are spectacular. 95 points – James Halliday, Wine Companion
The 2014 vintage comes entirely from the Short Flat vineyard which has light, sandy, well drained soils. The vines are planted on their own roots are dry grown, with the oldest planting being from 1923.The unique soils provide the Vat 1 characteristic length of fruit. The grapes were hand-picked and underwent a cool fermentation. After spending a short period of time on lees, the wine was bottled to maintain freshness.
