One of two new single varietal white wines made in 2017, this old vine Semillon is sourced from the Gallasch Vineyard in Ebenezer, planted in 1926 with the unique “Madeira” clone of Semillon. Custodianship of this vineyard has been maintained by numerous generations of the Gallasch family since early last century. It is hard country but the results are outstanding Semillon, Grenache and Shiraz, the latter regularly playing a part in Penfold’s Grange. The weak, sandy top soils over hard clay base delivers low yields that mature very early in the season providing freshness and full flavour with fantastic natural acidity. The Semillon was hand harvested, cold macerated on skins prior to fermentation with indigenous yeasts in seasoned French oak and acacia barriques, and spent eight months on lees prior to bottling without filtration. Plenty of racy lemon curd and subtle lanolin notes and a wonderful crunchy driven vibrant freshness. This will develop into something beautifully textured and complex with time but is also so delicious now. As with all Pete Schell whites don’t serve them too cold and give them plenty of aeration when they are young.
