Paul Prieur Sancerre Blanc Les Monts Damnes 2019

Sancerre’s highest, windiest, chalkiest and steepest vineyard, Les Monts Damnes is without doubt, one of the best sauvignon blanc vineyards in the world. Tasting any of Paul Prieur’s Sancerre’s you would be reminded of Chablis, dry German Riesling, piercingly dry chenin from Vouvray, or even Muscadet; but not the tropical numbers from the new world.  Initially closed, it takes a lot of coaxing and clasping of glass, but when the scents of jasmine, dried herbs, earth, smoke, stone fruits, citrus, melon and spice spring forth, I know I’m in for a treat. Deep, full bodied and resinous. A gentle note of cream on a texturally complex palate, with lanolin, faint grip and mouth watering minerality. There is abundant fruit of kiwi, white peach, grapefruit and citrus zest, but it’d the interwoven textures and earthier elements that build a stunning, sexy and cerebral wine. Exceptional carry and destined for a very long life. Truly great wine. Waters Wine Co
