Grosset Polish Hill Riesling 2022

$75.00

Pale colour, creamy yeasty, waxy, lemon-pith and blossom aromas, discreet and refined, tense and delicate in mouth; racy and lean, pared-back compared to the Springvale. Built beautiful perfumes as it sat in the glass. Tension is high, the wine is dry but supple and balanced, neither tart nor lacking acid, but harmonious. Long finish, needs time. Will surely score higher in future. 96 Points – Huon Hooke, The Real Review

Grosset Polish Hill is always a supremely elegant, powerful wine with a proven track record of graceful ageing in the cellar, and a release such as this is the foundation upon which that reputation is built. This is concentrated, structured and long, with jasmine tea, saffron, lemon pith, aniseed, fennel flower, green apple skins and white pepper – all of which colour in the background for the lime flesh and Clare volume of flavour. Brilliant. Drink it now or cellar it as you normally would – it is sensational. 97 Points – Erin Larkin, Halliday Wine Companion

Certified organic and biodynamic. As always, an intense and concentrated expression of Clare Valley riesling. Powerful scents of mixed citrus peel, lime essence, lemongrass and ozone with faint, exotic spice and blackberry characters in the mix. The palate delivers juiciness, brightness of flavour and a little powdery grip to finish. A little more diffuse than legendary releases of this wine, the 2022 vintage feels a bit more accessible in youth. A couple of years’ grace before drinking would yield additional enjoyment. 95 Points – Mike Bennie, Halliday Wine Companion

Producer Profile

Very few producers are as synonymous with a varietal as Grosset is with Riesling. Founded in 1981 in the town of Auburn, Clare Valley by Jeffrey Grosset it produces tiny amounts of single vineyard wines. Not only Riesling, but Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Fiano, Nero d’avola and Chardonnay from the Adelaide Hills.

The vineyards are high altitude plantings around Mount Horrocks. Distinctly different from one another, these differences are expressed in the varietals planted and the wines in the bottle. All vineyards are certified biodynamic and the wines are better than ever.

You cannot escape the sheer power of Grosset Rieslings, but they have achieved a greater level of refinement, balance, width, purity and finesse unimaginable 10 years ago. This phenomena is down to experience, a subtle natural evolution towards finesse, away from brute power, but also biodynamics. Ironically, Grosset’s other wines have always been a beacon of poise and elegance, particularly the Gaia even when the fashion for size was prevalent.

Biodynamics enables grapes to ripen sooner, ensuring natural acid retention, greater fruit purity, softer palates, supple textures and less weight, without sacrificing power. Indeed, since at least 2017 the wines are better balanced, harmonious, fine and with greater length. They may be less obviously powerful, but they are approachable younger, have longer palates and will be longer lived. Significantly so.
