Carl Loewen Riesling ‘1896’ 2021

$175.00

This is beautiful to drink now, but those things which really make it stand out in the crowd are only just beginning to reveal themselves. With every swirl of the glass the ripe peach and apricot aromas expand until there’s a great cloud of them. Staggering concentration is packed into a rather sleek frame, but the silkiness is no less astonishing. 97 points – James Suckling

One of Germany’s most iconic Rieslings, from ungrafted vines planted in 1896. A tribute to the old Mosel, made with traditional methods, and it shows. Unbelievably complex, refined, layered and detailed. Yellow fruits, tonic and herbs, smoke, clove, aniseed, buttered mushrooms and passionfruit. Fascinating attack, after a degree of discreetness, breadth and power, volume and precision. Very subtle sweetness, salting and piquant, the sweetness adding a sheen of silk to the crisp acidity and spicy carry. Immensely long, full of drama, unravelling, opening and closing. Breathtaking, extraordinary and magical. Waters Wine Co
