In Alsace, the term ‘Pinot Blanc’ can be used to describe wines made from any or all of the following grapes: Pinot Blanc; Auxerrois; Pinot Gris; and Pinot Noir. Weinbach’s Pinot Blanc is a blend of 70% Auxerrois and just 30% Pinot Blanc. (For the nerdier, recent studies of grape DNA fingerprints imply that Auxerrois is a cross between Gouais Blanc and Pinot Noir).
Weinbach’s blend comes from both Clos des Capucins (with 45-year-old vines) and a plot from the limestone/clay soils at the foot of the Altenbourg vineyard. As with the dry Rieslings, the Pinot Blanc was whole-bunch pressed, and was fermented and raised over eight months in large-format wood (it was previously raised in tank).
The 2019 harvest has given us a superb rendition of this wine. It opens with delicate aromas of orchard fruits and white blossom. The palate is fleshy, yet firmly structured and joyously crisp, with a crackling tension between the freshness of the acidity and the ripeness of the fruit. It’s a far more limpid and complex white wine than you might expect, and as with all the 2019 Weinbach wines, it’s very hard to drink slowly!

Producer: WeinbachIntense and full of character with notes of white flowers, stone fruits, citrus, spice, cherry and blackcurrant. Intense and full of presence, but with a lightness of touch. The spice is more elevated on the palate (clove) and although off-dry, feels drier for all that. Scintillating and mineral as you so often find with Falkenstein, […]
Add to cart Producer: Hofgut FalkensteinThe nose shows a little reduction before lemon, naartjie (mandarin), stone fruit, cut apple and a little nuttiness. Rich and broad with seemingly quite moderate acidity, round without being too leesy, this is a more generous vintage than usual. 92 Points – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za The grapes for this wine come from dry-farmed bush vines […]
Add to cart Producer: Donovan RallBiodynamic. Landron’s most mineral cuvée derives its name from the greenish, metamorphic bedrock (amphibolite) that dominates the soils in which it is grown. Produced from vines aged between 35 and 40 years, this unique wine was vinified with only a short period on lees, as Jo Landron wanted to retain as much freshness and minerality […]
Add to cartBondar’s 2021 Fiano is made with fruit from the Lacey block, three kilometres due east of the pristine Maslin Beach coastline. Some skin contact and ageing in old French barrels gives this fresh, aromatic variety texture and complexity. A cracking example of one of McLaren Vale’s rising star white varieties.
