In Alsace, the term ‘Pinot Blanc’ can be used to describe wines made from any or all of the following grapes: Pinot Blanc; Auxerrois; Pinot Gris; and Pinot Noir. Weinbach’s Pinot Blanc is a blend of 70% Auxerrois and just 30% Pinot Blanc. (For the nerdier, recent studies of grape DNA fingerprints imply that Auxerrois is a cross between Gouais Blanc and Pinot Noir).
Weinbach’s blend comes from both Clos des Capucins (with 45-year-old vines) and a plot from the limestone/clay soils at the foot of the Altenbourg vineyard. As with the dry Rieslings, the Pinot Blanc was whole-bunch pressed, and was fermented and raised over eight months in large-format wood (it was previously raised in tank).
The 2019 harvest has given us a superb rendition of this wine. It opens with delicate aromas of orchard fruits and white blossom. The palate is fleshy, yet firmly structured and joyously crisp, with a crackling tension between the freshness of the acidity and the ripeness of the fruit. It’s a far more limpid and complex white wine than you might expect, and as with all the 2019 Weinbach wines, it’s very hard to drink slowly!

Producer: WeinbachGrapes for the Kloof Street Chenin Blanc come from vineyard parcels on a variety of soils in different parts of the Swartland. The wine is part tank and part barrel fermented. Pale straw in colour, this wine has a nose of sun ripened pears and wet granite. The palate has a vibrant acidity balanced by […]
Add to cart Producer: MullineuxThe first Turbiana I have tasted, wishing I had encountered the varietal years ago. Spring Jasmine, green apple, white peach, nectarine and lemon zest. Subtle textural grip and hints of cream embellish an otherwise linear, mineral palate. Super fresh, pitched perfectly, like a brilliant Soave in that it has the perfect fruit, acidity and flesh […]
Add to cart Producer: Cantina MarangonaThe Anjou Blanc is from old densely planted vines, rooted in shallow sand and schist soils. Aged for up to 18 months in 500L and Stockinger “cigar” barrels, 30% of which are new. This is certainly the estates signature style, if more approachable, fuller and rounder than the more aristocratic Savennieres. Clear, tender, transparent and […]
Add to cart Producer: Thibaud BoudignonLe Fief du Breil comes from a single, six-hectare biodynamically farmed vineyard, situated on a south-facing slope above the Sèvre river in La Haye-Fouassière. Fief is a term from the Middle Ages which means a piece of land once associated with (and probably owned by) the local Abbey or Duke. This in turn infers quality, as the local […]
