100% Chenin Blanc from clay/limestone soil with only 30cm of topsoil before the roots plunge directly into the pure chalky bedrock. Clos de Guichaux is a historic vineyard in Bizay, very near Brézé, and was replanted in the early 2000s with massale cuttings taken from the family’s best old vines in Brézé. The site is fast cementing its place as one of Saumur’s finest Chenin vineyards thanks to wines like this. Following a brief two-week ferment, the 2015 wine was raised for ten months in two to four year-old barrels (500-litre lightly toasted Atelier Centre France and François Frères). It has extra density, extra fat and extra layers of complexity, with smoke and flint on the nose. Beautiful, pure palate of crisp pear and searing minerality.
